The Sky Is NOT Falling

This is the sky. It's still above your head*. My posting on a day that isn't an IWSG post should not alarm you. It's just me trying to get back into good writer habits.

The pandemic threw me off my writer game a bit because I wear a few different hats.

In the beginning of it all, I had to don my Mom Hat and welcome the return of The Boys. In a single week, I went from empty-nesting substitute teacher/writer to frazzled unemployed teacher/unpaid short order cook and TP hunter.

My brain and my soul kept saying, "This is insane! The world has gone nuts!" Time to don the social work hat. Sure, teaching best suited my writer life, but my panicked brain couldn't help but care that the side-effects of the pandemic was going to be an increase in social ills.

So, as I tripped over boys and their X-box cords, I told myself- "Hey self, you have the skills and the  degree to help...activate that license and get back out there."

How hard could it be?

Fast-forward a year later and I'm realizing that being a social worker during a pandemic is very time consuming and I completely allowed my writer side to go dormant. I would give myself a hearty kick in the pants, but it was for a good cause. And since I know the benefits of self-care, it's time to reward myself...time to be a writer again.

A lot has happened to my family over the last year, so there's a lot to catch up on. But for now, I want to sign off and go visit you guys and see how you all have been doing.

Before I go, I need to say Happy Birthday to my big brother. He's in my heart and up in Heaven, which means I don't have to buy him a card to make contact. I'm sure he just knows.

*If the sky is NOT above your head, you're probably upside down. To right yourself, stand on those feet and look up.

So, tell me, what's new with you?

  2. Yes, my dear, there could be no end to helping others, especially during a pandemic. Limits, limits, limits! (As if I have that down. My writing has collected more dust than Martha Stewart's womanhood.

    1. But then you have been doing stand-up, which I am so intrigued by. One day, I will be part of your audience and I won't even heckle you!

  3. I bet you're an amazing social worker, Elizabeth! But I'm sorry all this has affected your writing schedule. But I know what you mean. I've not been writing much at all this year (actually I've not really done any!) but I'm ok with that. Although I do feel a bit guilty for the readers who do love my books, but I know I'll start up again when the time is right. I have, however, still been very creative — having started a new lifestyle blog in January, and more recently, have started learned about photography, something which I am so in love with! I can't wait to see where it takes me!
Big hugs to you, and I'm also sending love and light to your dear brother in the stars

    1. Suzy, you are a dynamo! You have so many talents, I bet you're never bored. But you will have to get back to stories soon, you owe it to readers to keep them entertained.

  4. You did something amazing when people needed you - how cool are you!! But yes, as a writer, it must feel as though a little part of you is missing. I'm glad you've found your way back to it. I'm looking forward to the next Elizabeth Seckman novel!

    1. I am so cool, lol. You said it perfectly, a non-writing writer is like a person with a piece missing. I have been working on another story. It's the rest of the "writing" stuff I need to get back to. I started here because the blog is my favorite of all the platforms.

  6. Glad you're trying to get back into your writing. But sometimes family life and work can get busy, and you can only do what you can do.

    1. You're right. Life comes before everything else and there are only so many hours in a day.
