September Update 2019

I can't believe we're coming to the end of September already. I bet I've said that at the end of every month for the last fifteen years. Remember when you were young and old people would tell you how time flies and you'd think- sure, sure, old codger, stop interrupting my life with your depressing philosophy? I should go back in time and apologize for my ignorance. Young me didn't have a clue- too busy having fun to worry about time.

This month has been a busy one. I have no idea how many words I've written because I've been sneaking them in when I can. September was Boy #1's last month at home. His final days as a dependent before heading off to join the working grind in the city. I introduced him to IKEA. He was amazed that we could fit an entire apartment in a mini-van. Then he was even more amazed at the amount of work it took to put it all together.

But the results were good. Now, according to him, all he has left to get is a cat and some good books to line his book shelf. And no, he didn't request any copies of his mother's books. That kid.

I was so excited about the washer/dryer- until we used it.
It was so unimpressive, we bought a drying rack the next day.

Cozy. Special touches were my son's picks from the throw pillows to the rug.
Even the plant was his purchase.
His grandma always said a home needed plants to be a happy place.

Now, for the month's entertainment wrap-up.
TV Shows:
The Boys (Prime Video) From IMDb:Vigilantes battle corrupt superheroes. This is always how I  imagined superheroes would really act- with the exception of the pure-hearted Superman. But then he isn't human. Give humans superpowers and I my money is on them going from normal to jerk faster than a speeding bullet.
Downton Abbey (available on Prime Video) From IMDb: The chronicles of the aristocratic Crawley family. I contend this is one of the most awesome show ever. Human drama and a castle. Beautiful dresses and a castle. Quirky, fun staff and a castle. What's not to love about this show? Did I mention it's set in a castle? Binge-watching this for a second time to be ready to see the movie.

Movies:
The Age of Adeline Adeline stops aging after a car wreck and finds that trying to have normal relationships decade after decade becomes quite a hardship. This was a good movie with a sweet love story and interesting science regarding the anti-aging.
Rocket Man Best movie of the month. The story of Sir Elton John. I loved the way they weaved the songs into the story showing how different periods of the artist's life influenced his music. Behind the bigger than life stage performance, the musical prodigy comes across as a thoughtful, humble, likable guy.
Case 39 This was a decent horror movie. I wondered how a movie with Renee Zellwegger and Bradley Cooper went under the radar, but it seems this movie didn't hold up to critical standards. I thought it was good. Well worth the watch, especially when it was a free Prime movie.

Books:
This month's reading list is brought to you by sassy, self-defending young ladies and the extraordinary men who try to tame them.
Cloak of Snow (Totem Book 3) by Christine Rains. Saskia Dorn is a tough-as-nails shifter who falls for the hot bear god, Sedge, as they battle evil while looking for the Totems needed to save the all the shifters from extinction.
Tall, Dark, and Undead by Sandra Cox. Suzanne can kick butt, until she is outnumbered. Attacked in an alleyway, she starts to lose the fight when a handsome stranger swoops in and saves her. He's not your typical guardian angel- this one is a vampire with a reformed black heart.

Coming Soon!
An anthology of true tales tails. I'm excited to be a contributing author. Isn't this the most amazing cover?

  1. Hey, thought it was time I visited again - but you don't have to return the visit, I'm still not there :-)

I love the decor of your son's place - it looks so homely! It's a big step for him, but you've prepared him well.

  2. Love to hear about your son's growing up and discovering Ikea. He has the correct priorities, the cat for company and then the books, can't be bad 🤗

  3. Your son set the apartment up nice.
I haven't seen Case 39. I'll have to look for it.

    1. He did. I was surprised. After years of setting him up in dorms for college and his refusal to even add a poster to the walls, I was surprised. But he will be here a while, so best to make it comfortable.

    1. Yes, that's me. Senior trip with friends.

It was a good story. I really enjoyed it. Life is quieting and I'm hoping to read more and romance is my favorite genre...why not start with the books of friend's?

  9. Well sweetie time seems to never move on you. I think you still look the same as the picture from the 80’s, probably because Wonder Woman never ages. Plus, great movie write up. Can’t go wrong with any of them.

  10. He does need a cat to keep him company.

I've never even been in an Ikea store.

    1. Never been to Ikea? It's quite the shopping experience. Sort of like a home-centered mall. There's even daycare and a restaurant.

  11. Did you say Boy#1 moved to New York? That must be a huge change.
    YOU have a great one.

    1. I'm so shocked you would suggest a cat.

It's worth watching. The more I think on it, there is a bit of a plot hole that has been bugging me, but nothing big.

  15. Cats and books? You have clearly raised him right! I loved helping my daughter fix up her apartments in college. She had books and a cat, too. The apartment looks fab. Too bad it's not set in a castle, though, right?

    1. If it was in a castle, he might not have been able to get rid of his mom.

What is it about castles? And what does it say about me that I see myself as working in the servants quarters, but still finding that intriguing?

  17. I love love LOVE that picture of you. Something tells me there was a little bit of devil under that angelic exterior of yours. :)

Your son's place looks cozy and homey. (Must be the plant!)

That book cover is great, but what I really like is the title. Verrry clever!

    1. Who me? A devilish side? Never.

The plant makes ALL the difference.

Isn't that a great title? I had nothing to do with it, but enjoy that it makes me look good. :)

  18. I loved Rocket Man. And Downton Abbey? To die for. My son said he will go to the movie with me even though he's never seen the show. I know something in the movie will make me cry or will frighten me and I'll have to grab Favorite Young Man's arm and hold it in a death grip. I went in Ikea for the first time recently. Scared me half to death. It went on forever. At one point I lost my son. I had to call him to ask him to find me.

    Love,
    Janie

    1. My son said the same thing! I tried to get him to binge watch it with me but he declined. He said he's pretty sure he can keep up with the plot without knowing all the backstory.

Ikea is a monster store. We went through all the show rooms and then went to the basement to get our boxes of self-serve furniture and my son asked, "Why didn't we just come here and skip all the rooms?" I told him so he could imagine the furniture in his own space. To which, he countered that they have the pictures on the boxes. You can lead a guy to Ikea and you can force him to drink in the aesthetics, but you cannot make him swallow the fact that it was time well spent.

  19. I can remember after having the babies folks kept telling me to enjoy them, they'd be grown before I knew it. No way, I thought, but they were right. AND again:) thanks for the mention, MUCH appreciated.
