Just Say No

I was trying to think of a blog post, so I went to my drafts where I have 108 half-written, half-baked posts. In that lump of almost-somethings, I found this:

We've all heard about the beauty of saying yes,
but sometimes saying no is even better!
Saying no could save you from a mental break down or an STD.

That's all there was. Three lines that I evidently ran out of steam on.
When I wrote those words, saying no was some vague concept I didn't know what to do with.

But as life gets busier (and I get older), time feels more precious, and I'm much stingier with the amount I have to spare. There's no running out of steam on no's anymore and life couldn't be more peaceful.

Time for my small things check-in. Thanks to our hosts Lexa and L  .G  for this weekly reminder to look for the good things in life!

Son #1, Caleb, is spending his spring break in Vietnam. He said the currency there is in dongs and the exchange rate is awesome. I told him he can brag about getting a lot of dongs for a buck. Yes, he does think I'm hilarious, especially when he's counting on me to pay for his flight home.

Son #4, Conner, has FINALLY chosen a college. Drum roll, please! He chose WVU...the exact same college his other three brothers attend(ed).

It's Good Friday (still thinking that should be called Good For Us Friday)! Am I weird to feel guilt over this holiday? I watched the Passion of the Christ and the whole time I was thinking how I'd love for that story to end differently, you know, without the betrayal and crucifixion. But then the selfish side of me is like well, it was God's will, so let's just go with it as is.

  1. That story could end no other way.
Four sons who went to the same college makes it easier on you.
I have no problem saying no now. Said no to the Challenge next month and now I'm looking forward to some time off.

    1. I'm saying no to the challenge too. I don't keep up with regular blogging very well, much less daily blogging. My hat's off to all of those who can meet the challenge.

    1. It has been the fodder for a so many chuckles, it's become boring.

  3. I used to have a terrible time saying no but I'm getting a little better. Age does seem to make a difference. How cool that your son is in Vietnam. What an amazing experience for him and the dong jokes are a gift for you LOL.
Happy Easter to you and your family!

    1. I must admit, I still feel a tiny bit of guilt when I say no, but not enough to make me say yes.

  4. Since I became a mother, I've found saying no to be a bit trickier. It's easy to say no to people outside the family, though.

    1. My kids are a whole different story, especially now that they're all grown. I could say no easily to my kids when they were little, but as adults, I'm a sucker for whatever they ask me to do.

  5. Interesting idea about being stingier with time as we grow older. I think maybe we get more honed in to what we really love and spend more time on those things. Yay for the adventurous and not-so-adventurous sons! <3

    1. I think you summed it up perfectly. My focus is definitely on the things that are important to me.

  6. No is a undervalued word. Applying it in a fair and sensitive way is so often hard, but like you, I must keep what sanity I have left, so it must be used!!!

    1. We can wear ourselves out trying to do too many things. It's just not smart.

  7. I agree, saying no is important especially to someone like you Liz.

Great that all the boys chose the same University.

    1. Now that they will all have the same Alma mater, they don't have to fight over football rivalries, though no other football team in our state is much of a contender against WVU.

  8. No is so important. Love that line about how saying no can prevent STDs. That cracked me up :-)

    1. I make little notes with thoughts or ideas and leave them scattered about. Sometimes they make me grin, sometimes I groan. The STD line was a grin.

  9. How many dongs can you get for a dollar? Ha!

My oldest is going to be a senior next year, so I'm pretty anxious about the whole process. You're a pro at it by now. Any advice would be great!

    1. I hear the exchange rate is very much in the dollar's favor. My son is becoming a pro at finding bargain priced travel.

I'm such a pro at shoving them out of the nest that boy number four is behind in everything that needs done because I'm no longer all that worried...it all works out. All the things I panicked over with the others, I'm more relaxed about now.
