Oh Pop!

Thanks so much, Elizabeth, for letting me and my Pop Travel blog tour to invade your pretty, pink blog! Elizabeth requested a Lazy Housewife post – my alter-ego who finds shortcuts and multitasks, in addition to getting creative and saving money. Today, I'm going to talk about staying healthy!

Have you gotten your flu shot? I'd love to hear y'alls opinions of whether to get one or not. The sickie season is upon us. I blame the weather. As kids go back to school and it gets colder, they stay inside and forget to wash their hands and as soon as one gets a bug, they pass it around… Well, here are some Lazy Housewife sickness prevention tips!

  • WASH HANDS! You all know this already. But don't overwash, it dries the skin. Before eating should be fine.
  • KEEP TISSUES HANDY – I keep a box in almost every room (like my mother before me =) Catch those sneezes! Don't wipe your nose on your sleeve! ah!
  • STAY WARM – the cold doesn't give you a cold, but being cold lowers your inner defenses, leaving you more susceptible to catching one if you're around a sickie.
  • LYSOL SPRAY laundry baskets before putting the clean clothes into them.
  • And for when you have a sickie in the house…
    • CONFINE the sickie to a certain chair or couch
    • CLOROX WIPES – love those things! wipe light switches, door knobs, remotes, etc
    • SPRAY – pillows, furniture, floor
    • STRIP the bedding
    • KEEP SPARE tootbrushes to replace any needed to throw away.
    • WASH YOUR HANDS

And to stay healthy, do the four essential things recommended by doctors, Prevention, Self, lots of healthy people! Tried and true, the basics will do, I just wish I could abide by them better.

  1. Eat veggies and fruits
  2. Drink water
  3. Get sleep
  4. Exercise

May you make it safely through sickie season! Wishing you well!
And thanks again, Elizabeth sweetie, for having me over. Now, here are some details for Pop Travel.

Cooper thought he could get through
life without having to pop...
Pop Travel by Tara Tyler
A tale of deception and teleportation.

When a distraught client enters J.L. Cooper's small town detective agency, ranting about a pop travel teleportation cover up, Cooper takes the case. He blames the pop travel craze for his wife's death and would love to expose a glitch in it.

But the glitch turns out to be disintegrating travelers. And now, his client is dead, his secretary is missing, and a hitman is stalking him. Plus there's all the webcams watching his every move. Cooper must find a way to expose the deadly flaw, while using pop travel to escape the maniacs covering it up, not to mention save a couple of tag-alongs he's not sure he can trust. No problem.

  1. I'm an inoculation fan. I know people talk about the risks, but I got swine flu in 09. So did my then nine month old. We spent Halloween with temperatures close to 102. It was the first time getting an inoculation was not an option (I wasn't young enough, and my kido wasn't young enough to be in the at risk group). It chaps my hide that I couldn't get the shot when it would have done me some good.

    1. I have never had a flu shot. Just never really thought about it. I've been pretty lucky in staying healthy. Now that I've said that...oy...better go get a flu shot!

  2. Great healthy tips, Tara! Eating veggies and fruits is a big one for not getting sick. I got my husband the Nutribullet for his birthday last winter, and we have a nutriblast every morning with 3 servings of veggies and 2 servings of fruit, green tea (great antioxidants!), and some kind of nut or seed. Then we make sure to get at least 2 or 3 more servings of veggies the rest of the day and maybe one more fruit (just have to be careful with too much fruit because of the sugar). Neither of us have been sick since December 2012. Not even a sniffle! Sleep, exercise, and hygiene are important, too, but there's nothing like eating properly to keep your immune system super strong.

    Congrats on your book, Tara!

Happy reading and writing! from Laura Marcella @ Wavy Lines

    1. My son wants a nutribullet. I just imagined all the fruit in the house getting spun into strange brews and poured down the drain. But it seems to be serving you guys well!

  3. As someone who hasn't escaped the bugs (it's impossible working with so many kids!) I second these recommendations :) Now, if only I got sick days and a sub...

    1. Little kids are definite germ carriers! Hardly any escape from those bugs. But on the bright side, imagine how strong your immune system will be when you're old?

    Thanks for sharing, Tara. :D

    1. I like to keep them in the bathroom and just give the place a wipe down a few times a day. I live with a bunch of teens, it just makes me feel better knowing the handles are all clean!

  6. I'm checking off the list like Alex above me! Spot on. I'm totally a fan of flu shots. I know there are haters, but with an immune-compromised kid, I think they're important and worth it!

  8. I've gotten a flu shot for at least 5 years now, to great results. In hindsight, I believe I had the flu at 17 and 21 but at the time thought it was just a really bad cold lasting two weeks. The anti-vaccination cult gets absolutely no love from me. Recently I even discovered some of their more militant members deny the germ theory. I can't even with these people.

  9. Hi Tara and Elizabeth!

I thought I was getting sick last week, but turns out my throat was irritated from smoke. They were doing some controlled burns all around us. Gack. Choke. Choke.

  10. Tara - loved your Lazy Housewife tips, especially "confine sickie to a certain chair or couch." Yup, we should just tie 'em up there! Another tip is to bring a wastebasket just for them. I can't tell you how many times I've gotten someone's cold by picking up stray kleenexes flung everywhere.

Elizabeth - Thanks for your good wishes on Julie's (and several other) blog about my cover reveal. I appreciate them! :-)

  11. Yay for the Lazy Housewife! I love Tara's posts. We got our flu shots last month. This is the first year the little guy didn't cry from it. We're still going to get colds, I know, but with these tips, I'm better prepared!

    1. I never thought of that either Julie. Well, I do have to clean them occasionally- when I leave them out by the clothes line, my dog always pees on them. So, a couple of times each summer, they get scrubbed. :)
