Growing Baby Carrots

Baby carrots, the perfect little quick snack.

The other night, my husband and I were planning our garden for this spring and summer. We're going to expand it. This year, we'll plant a field of potatoes, extra peppers, and of course, more tomatoes.
Then my husband suggested we plant baby carrots.
Baby carrots?
Yeah, baby carrots. Like the kind I dip in the ranch dressing, duh.
Uh, those aren't grown into baby carrots. They're big carrots whittled down to snack-size.
After a quick surreptitious glance at his phone, and I assume Google, he says, "I knew that. I was testing you."

Good thing he's pretty.
But what say you? Not whether he's pretty or not, but the baby carrots? Are they born that way or are they made?

Now, let's add a Bookish update...

This month's word count so far:  2,471 words. And I'm still reading the same books as last time. I've been busy and all the words are taking a hit.

  1. I planted carrots last year. And they basically grew into baby carrot size. Something about the soil here - they just won't get much bigger.

    1. Same here. The last time we planted carrots they looked like orange turnips. Farmer Chad's theory is the soil is too hard and needs to be softer to get a better carrot-shaped carrot.

  2. LOL. As autumn is nearing, we are growing seedlings for our winter crops (mostly root veggies). And yes: carrots, too :-)

    1. We tried a winter crop of beans and turnips. We got nothing, but the local bunnies got chubby for winter, so that's good.

  3. The caption for the picture really made me chuckle.
Baby carrots taste so different though. They have to be something other than big carrots cut down to size.

  4. Baby carrots are cut and shaped. We planted carrots in our garden once, long ago. They were about the size of baby carrots and tasted bitter. They were not something you'd want to dip in dressing or eat without dressing. My father-in-law used to wear a cowboy hat. He wasn't from the West, had no cows, and Yellowstone didn't exist. He just liked cowboy hats. Your fella looks very nice in his.

    1. We planted them once, and they were pithy and awful.

You don't have to own a cow to own the hat, though my husband has the cows to go with the hat.

  5. Baby Carrots are cut and shaped from big carrots that didn't grow too pretty.

  6. I tried growing a tomato plant last year and failed miserably. Right now I have a basil plant and that sucker is strong because I barely remember to water it and it is still alive. I kinda feel bad for it, like I should give it to someone with a greener thumb.

    1. Not watering regularly gives a plant stronger roots, so maybe you're not such a bad plant owner.

Failed at the tomato? Blame the weather. Works for crop growers everywhere.
