In Real Life...

Have you heard? I have a new book coming. Okay, so you have probably heard and may be tired of hearing it. Oh, the plague of marketing.

Earlier this week, I took a day away from the clutter in my house and the ever-growing to-do list and met up with fellow blogger and writing buddy, Lisa Buie Collard.  You know, you wonder if those "friends" you get along with so well online can translate to face-to-face meetings. Or will you get to lunch and it will suddenly be all awkward with nothing to talk about, so you'll want to ask the waiter for the check before you even order?

Or worse. The lovely Lisa could turn out to be a two-headed troll who's collecting bodies to stack in its basement.

That could have been bad. Very bad.

I'm happy to report the lovely Lisa is even lovelier IRL. Our meeting wasn't at all awkward. We did the math and realized we've been online friends for over six years. And face-to-face, we were like old friends. Only the kind of friends who also understand our most personal dilemmas. Like, how do you market without being a royal pain in the arse? Does the latest WIP move along at a steady enough pace? You know, the really important stuff in a writer's life.

It's good to know that during this journey it hasn't been all about the books. It's also been about the people. The people who become so much a part of our daily lives that even though you've never met, it's easy to say to people, "I have these friends..." and if you're a blogger, you totally understand.

*BTW, Lisa and I forgot to take a selfie!!! At no point during our four hour "lunch" did we think to snap a picture. Oh well. I guess we'll just have to meet up again.

  1. No photo? A certain group is going to give you grief.
But good to know you both think each other is awesome. We knew that though.

  2. 4 hour lunch must sure mean you get along. Or she really was a troll that had to cook you up and let you simmer before lunch could take place. We'll go with the former.

    1. If she'd have tried to force dessert on me, then maybe I'd have thought she was trying to fatten me up for later. LOL

  3. A 4 hour lunch? That's a winner. I remember meeting Elizabeth S. Craig in person and wow was she such a sweet person. Just someone you wanted to spend time with.

    1. That's one of my favorite things about book events- getting to meet up with writer friends.

  4. I agree totally with Elizabeth's assessment of our lunch! What a wonderful feeling, to know someone for so long that it felt like we were just catching up. Easy and wonderful. I am honored to have such a friend. Thanks Liz, for making the drive! And yes, I'd love to do it again, with a selfie this time!

  5. I'm glad to hear your online friendship translated so well into real life. I've only met two blogger pals in person, and in both cases, it was just like your experience. We got along like... old friends.

Woo HOO! How exciting about your new book! I can't wait to see how much it's changed since the version I read. (And loved.)

    Happy Mother's Day, kiddo.

    1. I always joke that I've never met some of my best friends. LOL

I guarantee it's a better book. I believe I used all of your suggestions. Even the first line of the book was thanks to you challenging me to write a better opening line.

  6. How fun! Even though I have a feeling a lot of non-bloggers, etc think I'm nuts, I still think of my blogging buddies as friends. :)

Good luck with the new book!

    1. Just add that to the number of people who just think writers in general are nuts. LOL

    1. I was trying to think...I think I've met at least ten online friends, and so far, they've all been as wonderful IRL.

  8. That is so cool! I've met a few blogging friends in real life and it's been great. No two-headed trolls :)

I've pre-ordered your book and will leave a review on Goodreads. Sorry, can't do Amazon as they've banned me from leaving reviews :(

    2. They banned you? That's awful. I understand their need to keep the reviews legit, but I think they're catching a lot of innocent people in their bans.

And thanks, I'll shoot you an email.

  9. I cannnnnnnnnnnn't believe you guys forgot to take a picture!!!!!!

He says so with a satisfying (but annoying:) smile on his face because he did take a picture with Lisa when he met up with her IRL a couple of years ago.

Ok, enough of me talking in the "turd" person!

Very, very cool that you guys did meet and I hope us lot can sooooommmmeeeeday meet up as a group!

PS: Fingers so crossed for a successful launch of the new book:)

    1. I know you remembered. I don't know what I was thinking. Too bad you had to leave DC. You were sort of kinda in our neighborhood.

I would love to have a group meeting. I vote we all head to Canada. :)

  10. My experience too is that bloggies are even better IRL.
I'll bet that nice gentleman on your book cover is too. Send him my way, and I'll do the testing.

  12. I hope I'll meet up with some fellow bloggers one day! Don't really know any here in Scotland. Sounds like you had a fun lunch. I can give a shout for the book on the next IWSG day.

  13. I actually have not heard about your new book, so I'm glad I saw this post :)

I love meeting up with my online buddies. I haven't met anyone from the writer blogger community yet, but have met plenty of friends made through other online communities. I almost did a world tour consisting of meeting them, actually, back in 2004 :)
