Positively Annoying?

Conner, Caleb, Carter, and Cole at Heinz Stadium

If you're a fellow Steelers fan, you understand that last weekend was painful. After a season of ups, downs, and a tie the Steelers had a few hurdles to jump over to get into the play offs. Not only did they have to beat the Bengals, but the Browns needed to beat the Ravens.

As mostly devout Steeler's fans (we do have a Bears fan in that row of boys), we were excited for the game. And what a game it was! It was tight, but in the end, the Steelers pulled through to win by a field goal.

But that wasn't the only job that needed to be done to grab the wildcard spot. The Browns still had to win. Score updates had the Browns and Ravens swapping top spots minute after minute. After the Steeler's game ended, they switched the jumbotron in the stadium to the Browns vs. Raven's game.

No one left the stadium. Even the Steeler players seated themselves on their helmets right there on the field to watch. The Browns had the ball and the opportunity to win the game!

So hopeful, we were. This could be an epic moment. If the Browns could pull out a win, how awesome a moment would that be? The stadium would surely go wild.

But no. Three missed passes and an interception ended the game. But not in our favor.

We were bummed. Some more than others. My son Cole (the one on the far end of the picture) is a hardcore Steeler fan and he didn't take the Brown's loss well at all. He was so mad, he got mad at me for recovering from the loss too quickly. He pointed out that I was happy and over it by the time I left the stadium. That I'd say since it wasn't a tumor, it wasn't a big enough deal to be properly sad about it.

He was right.

It would have been nice to win. But not winning wasn't going to ruin my night. All of my kids were home. They are all healthy and as happy as young people with dashed play-off hopes could be (all but that Bears fan, he's still got Super Bowl dreams) and at the end of the night, I'm pretty darned happy.

Maybe next year will be a better year for football. Until then, I'll still enjoy the play off games.

I know, I know...the optimist in me is annoying at times.

Annoyingly Positive Plan B Playoff Plan

I can't root for my #1 team, but I have chosen teams I will be cheering for. Since I don't know much about any other team in the NFL besides the Steelers, I had to come up with a system for picking winners. So, I am using logic. If you paired up the mascots, who would come out on top?

Bears over the Eagles
Cowboys over Seahawks
Chargers over Ravens
(All birds lose, unless there's some sort of avian flu.)
Texans over Colts
(I'm assuming a Texan would be well armed and have the opposable thumb a Colt would lack.)

We'll see how my predictions hold up.
First game starts at 1:00. Check out the schedule here.

  1. Cool you were there! Yes, it was painful to watch, even with the win, because the Browns had to be lame. In years past, I would've been your youngest. Now, I don't let it bother me. Which is good, since the Steelers tend to disappoint...
With you on those predictions except for the Cowboys. They must lose! If they were play Satan, well, I'd have to think about it...

    1. Trust me, I never WANT the Cowboys to win. I'd break out in black and gold hives if I ever rooted for the Cowboys.

  2. I'm not necessarily a Steeler fan, but I love to watch greats, like Big Ben, play, and was a little disappointed with you. Two of my teams squeaked into wildcard births. Yeah. I'll be watching a lot of ball today. Cheers.

    1. That's how I'll be picking teams next week. Phillip Rivers or Drew Brees are pretty awesome guys, so I'll be crossing my fingers for the Saints or Chargers to make it through.

  3. At least the Steelers kept you hoping. My Falcons toyed with our emotions all season, and they lost games they should've won. ARRRRRGH! But I'm over it. At the end of the day, no matter how much I enjoy watching football, the outcome of any game has absolutely NO effect on my life. So I'm with you. Happy fits much better than anger or frustration. Maybe next season...

    Happy New Year!!!

    1. I have to admit, the 2017 Super Bowl ruined my night. I was so excited to see them beating the Patriots and then it all just disappeared. I can only imagine how bad that hurt their loyal fans.

  4. Sorry for the disappointment. But I'm sure glad the robins/robyns aren't a team. Phew!
    Happy 2019, girlfriend.
Cheers and all good things to you.

    1. Can you imagine the power of a Robyn team? The end zone dance would surely be spectacular.

  5. I'm not into football, but I can see how the play-off games can be a real roller coaster for fans. My hubby is a Vikings fan so there was some disappointment here the other night.

  6. Also not a football fan, but as a long-suffering LA Angels baseball fan, I feel the pain of not making the playoffs!! I call it the hot ex-girlfriend syndrome... every year, I give them one more shot, knowing they'll probably let me down.... but this will be the last year!!! And then October rolls around and we're not in the playoffs again! #deepsigh.

PS. As of 7 a.m. Sunday, you're 1-for-1 on your playoff pics :)

    1. I think I went 50-50, which isn't awful. I'd never go to Vegas with my predictions, but it makes watching the games fun.

LOL. Hot ex-girlfriend syndrome. You're such a funny guy. Ever thought of being a writer?

  10. I was so hopeful the Browns could pull out a victory over the Ravens, but it wasn't meant to be. At least, the Ravens are already out of the playoffs.

  11. I can't watch since the 49ers messed up the start of their season. I'm already looking to next year:)

    1. The beginning of the Steeler season wasn't looking overly hopeful, especially with the Le'Veon Bell drama and it remained a roller coaster until the end.

  12. Hey now, Cowboys over Seahawks? Although I'm not huge game-watcher, my husband is - so the Seahawks colors fly proudly in our house. We won't be going forward either, but it was a decent season (at least from my less-than-loud fan point of view). My husband has hopes for next year.
