Writing is so hard it's easy...
Easy to ignore.
Easy to abandon.
And writers be so crazy...
Crazy enough to equate ease with talent.
Crazy enough to forget it's a business.
Hopefully, we have friends who will remind us...
Treat writing like a job.
A job?
What a
novel idea!
Here's the thing:
Write when you don't feel like it.
Market when you'd rather stick needles in your eyes.
Wash, rinse, repeat.

Rememeber: Full Dark is now available!!
100% of the proceeds go to the Gary Sinise Foundation, which provides support to our heroes- our first responders, military, and police officers. As we watch the horror in New York where a terrorist turned a truck into a weapon, we're reminded once again how much we rely on our people in uniform to keep us safe. And when we're not safe, they are right there, on the front lines, putting themselves at risk to help.
Thank you, Harper L. Jameson!

I hate needles so I'd much rather write!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations to all of you on the release of Full Dark.
Thanks! and you better get writing!
DeleteCongratulations on the release of Full Dark! Loving "Writing is so hard it's easy..." Sums it up perfectly! Have a super month, Elizabeth.
ReplyDeleteThanks Nicola! I hope your month is super too!
DeleteI love this post. Everything you have said sums up a writer's attitude and frame of mind. We should treat writing like any other job and write everyday whether the muse turns up or not.
ReplyDeleteI learned that lesson the hard way. I wasted a large chunk of work time with a bad work attitude.

ReplyDeleteOoopsy, can't spell.
DeleteCan the needle go in my arm and not my eye? Then maybe I'll take it over marketing lol Congrats to all!
I can't spell either!
DeleteI'm not so sure about the needle in the arm. That could lead to even more problems. :)
Got my copy and am looking forward to reading it. After I pull the needles from my eyes, that is. ;)
ReplyDeleteWe could start a marketing hate club.
DeleteThe thought of poking needles in my eye is enough to keep me plugging away at writing :-) I've picked up a copy of Full Dark. Looking forward to reading it.
ReplyDeleteThanks for grabbing a copy. I hope you enjoy it.
DeleteNeedles in the eyes are never fun...better to be writing.
Congrats on Full Dark!!!
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, marketing is like sticking needles in my eyes every time. I mean, it's slightly better, I guess. :)
I love that quote by Kafka.
You're right. A needle to the eye is slightly worse.
DeleteCongrats on Full Dark!! I can't wait to read it. You guys are awesome for putting this together for such a great cause.
ReplyDeleteIt is a great cause. They're all over-worked, underpaid, and often unappreciated until a disaster strikes.
DeleteKnow what you mean, Elizabeth, about this writing business. Completing a writing course at that moment, so making myself write in this way! Well done with the anthology, a wonderful idea.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to take a course in January. There is always something new to learn.
DeleteCongratulations on the anthology and I love the first quote you have on your blog today. A professional writer is an amateur who didn't quit.
ReplyDeleteShalom aleichem,
Pat G @ EverythingMustChange
Thanks Pat!
DeleteYay for Full Dark making a splash in blog land today.
ReplyDeleteBloggers are kind to spread the word. :)
DeleteLoved the quotes. Am trying to schedule at least a little writing for me vs. my job. Will shout out about the anthology on Monday.
ReplyDeleteI got the Novlr app.I can set whatever daily goal I want and track my progress. I enjoy seeing some results quickly...everything else moves so slowly in the writing world.
DeleteDefinitely need to treat writing and marketing as a full time all round job. I tried it once and didn't get very far, I am so impressed with those of you who do.
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to reading Full Dark, sounds like some really good stories there.
I think you should write a book of anecdotes and sprinkle in your recipes. Sage wisdom...on food and life.
DeleteWell said. Thank you. Happy Wednesday Elizabeth :)
ReplyDeleteHappy Thursday to you!! :)
DeleteI don’t think I could ever forget it’s a business. lol I know better now. ;)
ReplyDeleteSometimes I stick my head in the sand and throw a mental temper tantrum about it. It never helps.
DeleteGary is so awesome. I love the charity work he does. We got to see him in concert at a conference in Chicago.
ReplyDeleteHow lucky are you?
DeleteIt is a great cause.
I'm trying to make writing is a business. Does that count?
ReplyDeleteIt sure does. That's all I'm doing...trying.
DeleteI think I'd rather take the needle to the eye...
ReplyDeleteThe anthology sound terrific. After the sweet things you said on my blog about my book, how could I NOT buy it? I'm looking forward to reading it, and it's in support of a terrific cause. Can't lose!
Happy November, dear lady, and have a super weekend.
All truths. I still can't believe you said it wasn't exciting. But I think you're awesome, so I won't harass you for it.
DeleteGood luck with the new release. Scary stories give me nightmares. No really, they do. That's why I can't do horror or blood and guts. I like the cozy mystery best. But Elizabeth, I love your little saying at the beginning. So concise. So pithy. Now if I can only do it...
ReplyDeleteAll best to you!
None of these are scary. More like psychologically dark stories.
DeleteI don't know what to do with free time anymore. What is it?
ReplyDeleteThat's what I tell my husband- writing may not earn me a ton of cash, but it consumes all my free time and I don't do things like shop or decorate.
DeleteCongrats on the release! Writing is easy to avoid, that's for sure. LOL
ReplyDeleteWe are more creative at avoiding work than making up stories on our bad days.
DeleteSo true and such a great reminder!
ReplyDeleteYou know, the needles do sound more appealing than the marketing... :)
