The Encyclopedia,
Social Media,
It's challenge day fifteen! Can I manage to post twenty-six times in April? Can YOU answer the questions Iripped gathered from my handy dandy, old-school, flip through paper pages encyclopedia?
Get them all (or a few) right and you could win the boobie prize!
Are we there yet?
No!
Now? Are we almost there YET?
No! Eleven letters left to go, now sit back and stop hitting your sister!
Oops! My bad. Must have been a flash back...
Oy Vey...you'd think we'd be there already!
To pass the time...we're going to test your Oy Vey! and other Yiddish terms we've blended into English.
1. What means oh woe?
2. What is a, um, uh...penis...used as an insult?
3. What is it to drag or haul?
4. What is a clumsy person?
5. What is guts, nerve, or daring?
Bonus: What is congratulations?
(1. Oy Vey; 2. putz (or schmuck); 3. schlep; 4. klutz; 5. chutzpah; Bonus: Mazel Tov)
& Me!!

Excuse me while I snicker like a twelve-year-old at the second one... ;)
ReplyDeleteWhen I was twelve, putz was my favorite word. My dad would yell at me, "Stop saying that! You don't even know what it means."
DeleteNow I do.
My father was never a putz.
I knew none of those....my Yiddish is sort of rusty! :)
ReplyDeleteMine too...I cheated and looked them up!
DeleteHmm ... 1, 4 & the bonus ... the others I've heard of and get in context, but couldn't have given the meaning.
ReplyDeleteI understand. I hear the words all the time and never know what they meant. One of the reasons I looked it up!
DeleteGot none but this was cool. Adding to my new Pinterest board 'Informative Post.'
ReplyDeleteWhy thank you!!! :)
DeleteYeah, I got three right! Also, my posts is going to be so full of schmuck tomorrow, just you wait . . . :P
ReplyDeleteOh my...that could be exciting!! I better be sure to check that out. :D
DeleteJust as I expected. zero. Yiddish not my strongest suit.
ReplyDeleteA dragon can only be expected to know so many languages!!
DeleteI didn't know that's what putz meant! I've used it at times I probably shouldn't have then LOL. Love the camel pic, how funny.
ReplyDeleteI never knew either. Now I know why it made my dad so mad! But I'm still using it. I'm a rebel like that ;)
DeleteI sort of bombed that one (I got two), but it's really funny to learn where our slang words come from.
ReplyDeleteAnd they are the best words! So much personality.
DeleteI knew them all. My mom's two best friends I spent my whole life growing up with our both Jewish. They always joke around saying I have two Jewish mothers besides my own. I've learned many great expressions from them; and they learned a lot of Italian from us, like how to tell someone off without words, cause have ten ways to do it just using our hands, LOL.
ReplyDeleteI am so jealous! I grew up in a town of approximately 800 people. Boring as sliced white bread.
DeleteI knew most of them! You definitely have chutzpah, Elizabeth. ;)
ReplyDeleteLOL. I try...though you ought to see me worry!
DeleteLOL,
ReplyDeleteGot them all.... Lots of Jewish friends with Jewish parents. LOL. Very fun. These words are great because they are so expressive!
Aren't they the best? YOu said it just right...totally expressive. You don't even have to know their meaning to know their meaning!
DeleteNot so good today. Better luck tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteOy Vey. LOL
DeleteI'm a master of Oy, Vey, but not at any of these. What a fun challenge!
ReplyDeleteI use it a lot. It's so much classier than Oh Hell.
DeleteLove using putz and chutzpah. But I need to put my oy vey to better use!
ReplyDeleteI think I use them all but Mazel Tov and surprisingly, I've only had one Jewish friend my whole life. WV isn't a very diverse state.
DeleteI got the bonus - thank you Fiddler on the Roof! And I would have got klutz if I wasn't so tired :-)
ReplyDeleteI've always spelled klutz with a c...wonder if that counts as the same word?
DeleteI got schlep, klutz and chutzpah, but I'm AtoZed out, so that's all I can do today.
ReplyDeleteSchlep on off and rest.
DeleteHello, Elizabeth, I got them all, that's because I pay attention and ....oh yes, I'm here for the A to Z challenge, and you visited my first blog at www.incomingbytes.blogspot.com. ! I have my second blog/PF at www.incomingbytes.com Do feel welcome to drop in anytime! ":)
ReplyDeleteThanks Raymond! I'll try to stop on by some more. :)
DeleteI knew all but the 1st... from my years in NYC. :)
ReplyDeleteI remember long road trips in the car with my family. My sister usually got car sick.
I have a boy who gets carsick. Boy do his brothers get aggravated!
DeleteCrap, only two today. Losing my touch.
ReplyDeleteI should have done a southern words and you'd have rocked it.
DeleteI didn't get any but I recognised the answers. Such awesome words!
ReplyDeleteThey are very colorful!! I love them.
DeleteToo funny. :) Love your questions.
ReplyDeleteThanks :)
DeleteI got four right. Not bad.
ReplyDeleteYou're a wise lady :)
DeleteI did not know 1
ReplyDeleteThat's pretty impressive!
