Got Green Blogfest 2.0
Mark Koopman, my favorite Irish immigrant, is hosting a hop about St. Paddy's Day. Me? Shockingly, this full blown American mutt doesn't have a bit o' Oirish! Hard to believe, I know. So, instead of my own traditions...I gathered some of my favorite facts from the web:
St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland
St. Patrick wasn't Irish. He was British.
He was abducted from his home in England and taken to Ireland.
He escaped, but had a dream in which he felt God was guiding him back to Ireland.
St. Patrick is credited for the first Celtic cross.
St. Patrick passed away March 17, 461 A.D.
It is estimated that there are 34 million U.S. residents with Irish ancestry
The first St Paddy's Day parade was held in Boston, USA 1762
The largest St. Paddy's Day parade is held in New York, USA. It boasts200,000 participants and 3,000,000 spectators
Population of Ireland as of 2012 was 4,722,028

DeleteNone of the patron saints seem to come from the country where they are patron - St George (patron saint of England) was Greek! Great facts - I didn't realise St Patrick was English!
ReplyDeleteThat's a cool fact too. America doesn't have a patron saint that I know of...probably conflicts with the separation of church and state. By default, I suppose it would be St. Nick...he's probably the most familiar!
