Got Green Blogfest 2.0
Mark Koopman, my favorite Irish immigrant, is hosting a hop about St. Paddy's Day. Me? Shockingly, this full blown American mutt doesn't have a bit o' Oirish! Hard to believe, I know. So, instead of my own traditions...I gathered some of my favorite facts from the web:
St. Patrick wasn't Irish. He was British.
He was abducted from his home in England and taken to Ireland.
He escaped, but had a dream in which he felt God was guiding him back to Ireland.
St. Patrick is credited for the first Celtic cross.
St. Patrick passed away March 17, 461 A.D.
It is estimated that there are 34 million U.S. residents with Irish ancestry
The first St Paddy's Day parade was held in Boston, USA 1762
The largest St. Paddy's Day parade is held in New York, USA. It boasts200,000 participants and 3,000,000 spectators
Population of Ireland as of 2012 was 4,722,028

I'm a bit less ignorant now, thanks to you. I didn't even know St. Paddy and St. Patrick was the same person, hello!
ReplyDeleteIt wasn't until I met Mark that I knew it was spelled Paddy and not Patty...so we're all learning!
DeleteWho knew? I didn't! At least the ole St. was a good sport about being abducted and all. :P Love your new look, it's actually kind of spectacular. :)
ReplyDeleteIT IS AWESOME!!! I have the talented Tara Tyler to thank for the header, and the wonderful Livia Peterson to thank for the give away.
DeleteIt is spectacular. I just like to sit and stare at it!
God truly works in mysterious ways. Thanks for the history lesson Liz. Glad to see you're in the blogfest as well.
ReplyDeleteYou said it Sheena-kay. He uses all things for good.
DeleteLOL! God surely works in mysterious ways... look at Liz and I... separated at cyber-birth and here we are as non-joined twins :)
ReplyDeleteHappy St. Patrick's Day :)
Amazing, isn't it?!
DeleteI didn't know this stuff! Thanks! And btw, I love your blog header. :)
ReplyDeleteI didn't either. I spent a whole morning watching videos and reading history pages. My nerd side was in heaven!
DeleteGood to know I'm part of that 34 million. Strength in numbers, to be sure. :)
ReplyDeleteSo cool! It's a colorful lineage...to be sure!
DeleteNone of the patron saints seem to come from the country where they are patron - St George (patron saint of England) was Greek! Great facts - I didn't realise St Patrick was English!
ReplyDeleteThat's a cool fact too. America doesn't have a patron saint that I know of...probably conflicts with the separation of church and state. By default, I suppose it would be St. Nick...he's probably the most familiar!
DeleteI enjoyed your trivia. Americans make much more of a deal over St. Pat's Day than the Irish do, funny that.
ReplyDeleteHey, Americans do everything big!
