Where Did That Tiara Go?

            I miss that little dog...

I was combing through my draft files of abandoned posts and found this gem. It's a picture from 2013. All I had finished was the photo and the title: Why I Haven't Been Writing.

In the picture, I'm reading a book by J. Andersen. Most likely, I'd been on a posting hiatus (AKA lazy blogger) and needed to crawl out of my cave to help Jesse promote her book. I haven't spoken (by spoken I mean emailed or chatted) with Jesse in ages. She was a very talented writer who was busy with a house full of kids and a day job. Jesse and I once averaged the hours or time we spent producing a book to find out how much we were earning per hour and realized we were working for pennies. (I would have said peanuts, but with the rise of inflation, peanuts are not so cheap!)

Maybe that wasn't such a good idea... analyzing something you love.
Hopefully she reappears on the writing scene one day. If she does, I'll never suggest the value of writing books be evaluated mathematically ever again.

Remember...do it for the love.

  3. I love that saying by Bradbury and try to live with it. You have such a wonderful sense of humor.

  4. I've made that calculation before too, and regretted it. I write for the pleasure, the adrenaline surge on publication, and the posthumous fame 😁

    1. ME TOO!!! I always tell myself I have until a century after my death to "make it".

  5. It's been pennies for me for too long now. I aim to change that this year. Of course, by the time I deduct marketing costs, it may still be pennies. LOL

  7. That is one of the changes I made. I stopped looking at writing as a money stream, but as a way to enjoy my life. I made the mistake of telling myself I had t earn the right to enjoy it. But if writing ever starts to frustrate me and be a drain on my soul, I'll do something else.

  8. I had to take a break for a few weeks because of pressure of not being good enough was killing the joy of writing. I'm back, but it's a lot of work not to fall back into that mindset again.

    1. From a selfish point of view, knowing you have some insecurities, when I know how good your books are (I just read one!), then I feel a bit more confident.
