August Update

August is great because it's the month of my birth and my anniversary, so that means presents and I like those. What I don't like about August is that it means the end of summer. I'm not a fan of summer ending. I don't love pumpkins and I loathe back to school. I acquired the disdain for summer as a child with school phobia issues and I've fostered the feeling for decades. Honestly, school buses break me out in hives- figuratively speaking.

Other than grumping about the end of summer, here's a recap of the best of August shows and movies. And a recipe perfect for all those delicious tomatoes that are soon about to stop growing in the garden because, well, summer is ending and Jack Frost is headed our way.

Movies this month
Ready or Not  I enjoyed this movie. Horror movies can get trite after a bit and I thought this one had a fresh spin. It also had some humor.
Brightburn Creepy. What if Superman turned out to be a bad guy? This movies was a gory cringe-fest. Interesting concept. Definitely gives horror movies a run for flinch-worthiness.
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood I'm not usually a Tarantino fan. I get tired of the gore, but I enjoyed this movie. The gore was kept to a minimum and I was in total love with Brad Pitt's character. I know, it's Brad Pitt, what's not to love, but as Cliff Booth, he was doubly endearing and adorable.
Where'd You Go, Bernadette? Notice the singular chick flick in the line-up of man movies? It was my birthday, so my day, my pick. I'd never read the book, so I had very little plot expectations. I picked it because the trailers were funny. It wasn't quite as funny as I thought it would be, but it was a good story. Very appropriate for a 50th birthday.

TV shows. With all the boys at home, we spend a lot of time on the weekends binge watching shows on Hulu and Netflix. Then there are all those extra hours I spend in the kitchen while they are home and I get to choose whatever I want. No one bothers me in the kitchen where they might be put to work.
My 600 Pound Life My kids hate this show and make fun of me for watching it. They see human misery exploited; I see people with issues and problems offered the tools they need to overcome adversity.
The Handmaid's Tale I had very high expectations for this show and I like it, but sometimes I have a hard time connecting with June. But that may be part of her character arc as she is becoming more likable. A reminder to protect our freedoms, even when they're not the popular.
Mindhunter Always interesting. This season chronicles the child murders in Atlanta. I was a young girl when these murders were taking place, so I remembered that feeling of horror when week after week, another child would go missing or be found dead.
Deadwood Love this show, even if I do wonder how accurate the language is. I don't doubt that people in in the Wild West could be crude, but the potty mouths on these people. Makes me wonder.
Harlots I enjoy drama add in castles and ball gowns and I'm ready to tune in.
Schitt's Creek This show always makes me laugh. Maybe it's my small town roots that makes me enjoy the hodgepodge of eclectic personalities.

About those tomatoes. Nothing is tastier than a fresh-from-the-garden tomato, whether it's by itself with Miracle Whip or toasted.

In a skillet, add buttered bread,
slices of tomato sprinkled with garlic salt,
spinach leaves, and mozzarella cheese.
Cover with another slice of buttered bread and toast.

Delicious!
Last week was also National Dog Day. I missed posting on Facebook, but since my dogs can't read a calendar, they weren't offended. But here's a quick tribute to our best friends.

Happy Doggie Day from the Seckman canine crew:

  1. Didn't get out to see Ready or Not or Once Upon, but heard they are both excellent.
The dog with the curlers is definitely ready for Walmart.
I'm always excited to see fall on the horizon. Cooler weather.

    1. Around here, right behind that cooler weather is freezing temperatures. Good thing Christmas falls in winter or I'd call it pointless.

  2. I enjoyed Brightburn, too - creepy and kind of twisted. I didn't think it was particularly gory, at least not enough that it bothered me (and that kind of stuff usually does.)

Love the pic of the dog with the curlers! Too funny!

    1. Gory probably isn't the right word. It was too real. Not to mention anything in particular, but the scenes with gore were very realistic and definitely cringe causing.

  3. Interested in your school phobia, made me feel guilty, and the photographs were super 🤗

    1. My mom was sick when I was little, which exacerbated the fears. It took me two years to finish kindergarten. School and I were not friends until I was older.

  8. Did not know that was a Tarantino movie. I generally like them, even when they are really strange. I guess I like the strange. Gore doesn't bother me. I'll be seeing some of your movies and shows.

Apologize to the dog for my Cat's behavior, lol.

    1. Most of my nieces are fall crazy too, and I still love them. LOL. Christmas is a great bonus to winter, that's for sure.

  10. You're still a youngster;)
I used to feel like you do about the end of summer till we moved to NC. Since winter doesn't get a good toe hold till Dec Jan, it no longer bothers me.

    1. Bless you for calling me youngster. I've been feeling my 50 years strong. LOL

One day, I'd love to own my own spot on the NC coast and live forever summer-ish.

    1. True...but there's the scraping the frost off the car and the snow shoveling here in the north. See, Elizabeth wants to move south for the winter comment.

  12. I have never seen anyone in Walmart who fits these pictures I see online. However, love the dog pix. I quite like fall - it's cooler, today was lovely. I don't mind the snow either, I don't have to shovel it and if I don't want to I don't have to drive in it.

    1. I have seen some crazy stuff in Wal Mart, but usually it's me. LOL. When ours was still open all night and my kids were little, I was guilty a time or two from heading to wal mart in my very fanciest pajamas.

I do enjoy snow from my window. But the older I get, the more I hate the cold.

  13. Cutest fur babies😘😊 That sandwich looks so yummy!! I used to watch my 600 lb life. But I got upset later on when someone died, i hope its not a spoiler. And when the episodes got more and more about people not wanting this opprtunity to change their lives. And Dr. Now keeps giving them chance after chance. Nothing is as inspiring when you actually see one of them doing everything they can to make a positive change. It makes me rethink my lack of activity, and bad eating habits. Some of those people are just awesome. 600 lb life, where are they now? Is very good. It actually shows you their progress after their 1 year journey.

    1. I have seen those episodes. Two strike me the most about people I was rooting for and then they died. It was quite a downer. And then there are those few who seem to be totally selfish and squander every opportunity for help and don't seem to mind being a burden on everyone around them. I get annoyed with them, but they reinforce to me how amazing the ones who give it their all are.
I just started watching the Where they are show. It is great. It proves that we all have a learning curve. There were a few I thought would never make the connection and get healthy,, but they did. That's a great reminder that we aren't static. We can feel like failures one day, but get it together the next.

As for bad habits, I'm guilty also. I got a fitbit for Christmas and realized going from computer to coffee pot back to the computer wasn't as many steps as I thought.

  15. I'm exactly the same (we must be twins) in that I hate the end of Summer, but luckily I don't have to deal with that cold, wet stuff that blankets the area, looks beautiful for one day, and then is soul-sucking as one tries to uncover the driveway again!

PS: Love the shepherd with the band-aid... awesome quote :)

    1. It also loses it's beauty when I have to drive in it. I HATE driving in it.

And yes, we are totally twins. You got all the height. I got all the hair. :)
