Writing Is Easy

Writing is so hard it's easy...

Easy to ignore.
Easy to abandon.
And writers be so crazy...
Crazy enough to equate ease with talent.
Crazy enough to forget it's a business.
Hopefully, we have friends who will remind us...
Treat writing like a job.
A job?
What a novel idea!
Here's the thing:
Write when you don't feel like it.
Market when you'd rather stick needles in your eyes.
Wash, rinse, repeat.

Rememeber: Full Dark is now available!!

100% of the proceeds go to the Gary Sinise Foundation, which provides support to our heroes- our first responders, military, and police officers. As we watch the horror in New York where a terrorist turned a truck into a weapon, we're reminded once again how much we rely on our people in uniform to keep us safe. And when we're not safe, they are right there, on the front lines, putting themselves at risk to help.

  3. I love this post. Everything you have said sums up a writer's attitude and frame of mind. We should treat writing like any other job and write everyday whether the muse turns up or not.

    1. I learned that lesson the hard way. I wasted a large chunk of work time with a bad work attitude.

    1. Ooopsy, can't spell.

Can the needle go in my arm and not my eye? Then maybe I'll take it over marketing lol Congrats to all!

    2. I can't spell either!

I'm not so sure about the needle in the arm. That could lead to even more problems. :)

  5. Got my copy and am looking forward to reading it. After I pull the needles from my eyes, that is. ;)

  6. The thought of poking needles in my eye is enough to keep me plugging away at writing :-) I've picked up a copy of Full Dark. Looking forward to reading it.

Needles in the eyes are never fun...better to be writing.

  7. Congrats on Full Dark!!!
And yes, marketing is like sticking needles in my eyes every time. I mean, it's slightly better, I guess. :)
I love that quote by Kafka.

    1. It is a great cause. They're all over-worked, underpaid, and often unappreciated until a disaster strikes.

  9. Know what you mean, Elizabeth, about this writing business. Completing a writing course at that moment, so making myself write in this way! Well done with the anthology, a wonderful idea.

  10. Congratulations on the anthology and I love the first quote you have on your blog today. A professional writer is an amateur who didn't quit.

  13. Definitely need to treat writing and marketing as a full time all round job. I tried it once and didn't get very far, I am so impressed with those of you who do.

Looking forward to reading Full Dark, sounds like some really good stories there.

The anthology sound terrific. After the sweet things you said on my blog about my book, how could I NOT buy it? I'm looking forward to reading it, and it's in support of a terrific cause. Can't lose!

  19. Good luck with the new release. Scary stories give me nightmares. No really, they do. That's why I can't do horror or blood and guts. I like the cozy mystery best. But Elizabeth, I love your little saying at the beginning. So concise. So pithy. Now if I can only do it...

    All best to you!

    1. That's what I tell my husband- writing may not earn me a ton of cash, but it consumes all my free time and I don't do things like shop or decorate.
