Sign Gate Update and More!

Before I brag about the score of last week's match-up with our neighbor across the river, I must give so much credit and thanks to a River High School substitute teacher, Casey Tisher. This wonderful man encouraged students to return whatever Magnolia signs they still had, and they listened. (If you missed my sign rant, you can read it HERE).

He was able to gather nine of them.

A fraction of what's gone, but still, it means a lot.

(And it makes me so very darned glad we Magnolia Moms hadn't followed through with our own plan of vengeance!)

That Friday night, ruffled feathers quickly turned to full-fledged, Eagle-flogging mad when their team came out and did their pregame chant in the smack-dab-center of the M painted in the middle of our field...

we felt like these guys looked.

Oh, no. They didn't.
(My baby is #54, his buddy and fellow captain, Hunter #50)

As our coach said, that was a message of disrespect he hoped our players didn't leave unanswered.

And they didn't.

Time, after time. They took it to their goal for touchdown after touchdown.

If you got in their way, they moved you.

The final score: 40-12.

host this weekly good things
check in. We won. Signs are home.
Tara's here to visit!

We were a happy crowd. After the game, the moms gathered.

Were we still going to drive across the river and plant a huge sign on enemy soil that said, "Hey River, here's a sign: Magnolia 40 River 12"?

We relished in the idea, but had no motivation.

Their players are just kids. It was just a game. And it sucks to lose.

We put away our sheets and spray paint and went home.

So, when I got the message from Mr. Tisher on Saturday, I was so glad we took the higher road!

Special welcome to Tara Tyler! Tara knows all about football- she's raising a house full of boys herself. So, it was no wonder why I love Tara and I'm so happy to bring you her latest book, Simulation. I read the first book, Pop Travel, and it was pretty sweet. I loved Tara's view of the world of the future. I think she's spot on. Now, I need to grab this new book and see what other trouble Detective Cooper can get himself into!!

Now here's Tara, discussing another topic close to our hearts- Food!

Cooking shows are hot right now (hot - cooking, get it?)
At least they were - I think there's been a shift back to talent shows... I wonder if the decline might have something to do with so many celebrities entering the kitchen and spoiling the soup??

Anyway! I still love the cooking shows. Whether they're competing against each other or the clock or ingredients, they inspire me to try new things in the kitchen (like cook more) and give me ideas for substitutions, which I always seem to need in my recipes. Don't tell my hub - he hates when I do that!

So here are some of the shows I cook with and learn from and just have fun watching!
Chopped - first and most favorite cooking competition I ever watched
Cutthroat Kitchen - I sent in an idea to have baby-themed challenge - high chairs, baby food, baby spoons, etc.
Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives
Man vs. Food
Cupcake Wars
Guy's Grocery Games

Other fun, food-related or inspirational reality shows:
Bar Rescue
Restaurant Impossible - which came to my hometown and we still haven't been in to see it!
Shark Tank - many times the inventions are food-related, and definitely inspirational!
Undercover Boss - always a tear-jerker, but great for my kids to see how hard some folks have it and how hard they work for their families and that it pays off!

Do you watch any food contest or inspiring reality shows? I know there's a lot of junk out there, but some of it is entertaining! Food for the soul =)

Thanks so much, Elizabeth!
I'm so happy to know Liz IRL, she's a wonderful person! And I love working with this woman on our Really Real Housewife blog. I'm glad she talked me into it. Stop by for a few tips and tickles!

  1. Your team won! That is the best revenge. Good thing you didn't do the sign that night.
Tara, I'm a big fan of Bar Rescue and Restaurant Impossible.

    1. Winning is the best revenge. And watching those players do their thing on our M made me appreciate our coaches that much more. My kids spend more time with their coach than they do us, and I'm glad my boys are being led by men who appreciate discipline, respect, and community. We had the brilliant idea of taking our players over and getting a picture of them on their rock and make a meme that says "We own this", and our players said no way, their coaches would kill them, and as one said, "Tomorrow's stats will speak loudly enough".

  2. That was a blowout, showed them haha Can't say I watch anything to do with food.

    1. I don't watch food shows either. Or craft shows. I'm pretty lame as far as "womanly" things go.

  3. I'm glad you got some of your signs back, Liz. Creaming the other team on the scoreboard was the best revenge of all. Maybe they'll quit provoking your players. :P

Hi, Tara. The hubster watches Bar Rescue and Shark Tank. I don't watch much TV. My parents enjoy watching The Chew.

    1. I call them my signs so much, I had people confused. One guy thought I was wailing about a single sign from my yard, LOL. When I was working in social work, I called all of my clients "my kids" and someone finally asked me, "How many freaking kids do you have?"

  4. I like many of the same cook shows you've listed. I'm glad the team won!

    1. I never watch them. They make me hungry for things I'm way too lazy to cook. I need a PB&J channel.

  5. I'm not a reality TV fan....EXCEPT when it comes to cooking shows. Then I can't stop watching! After I quit my job I think I spent a good week in front of the couch, re-watching all 10 seasons that Hulu has of Top Chef! Way cool of that substitute to recover those signs :)

    1. I never watch them. My niece loves to watch them, and then try the recipes. I just reap the benefits of her efforts!

  6. I love the football pics! No station carries ESPN or Fox Sports in the Middle East since a couple of years, so I can't watch any more - therefore your pics got me all excited! I'm so happy that at least one adult over at River took the problem seriously and tried to teach the kids right from wrong. Yay for Tara's new book! I love the cover! :)

  8. Karma. Feels good to let it be and everything works out the way it should. So glad! I hope they learned. But with parents that condone such behavior, they probably won't.

Thanks so much for having me over! And I really enjoyed your Friday Night Lights saga - esp the awesome pics! Go Eagles!

  14. It's always best to take the high road. So happy they creamed the other team, though!!! I love to hear stories where the good guys win.

  15. Outplaying them was certainly the best revenge, since they're kids. Once they're adults, though, I'm all for some John Wick style punishment (not really).

I love Man Vs. Food. It's not just a great show, but the best dieting aid ever. Who the hell wants to overeat after watching a man eat 8 lbs of food in one sitting?

    1. I have days where I wish I knew a John Wick.

I do watch Man vs Food, or my kids do. Sadly, they often feel challenged to top him- which is hell on the food bill.

  16. Good for taking the higher road. They really are just kids, and you guys are good role models. :)

Yay for Tara! I love her books. I watch some cooking shows. Man vs. Food is awesome. My husband tried one of the challenges featured on that show, but couldn't do it!

    1. Your husband and my kids should go out to eat together. I don't get the fun of trying to over eat. I mean I do plenty of over eating, but it's not a challenge for me. LOL. My kids have t-shirts from all the local places where they win the food challenges. Must be a guy thing.

  17. I'm so glad a teacher helped teach a lesson, and a bit shocked they listened to a substitute teacher. Yeah that you got some of the signs back.
Tara, I still love cooking shows. My kids hate watching them but I think they are absorbing something and will be better off for it when they have to fend for themselves. Or is that a justification for making them watch what I want?
    Congratulations on your book.

  23. Yay for Tara!

  24. Yay for the win! That's a great lead you guys had. And I'm glad you worked it out without the need of vengeance.

I don't watch cooking shows (I don't watch much TV at all), but I caught a few blips of Master Chef. I swear, I'd get kicked out in the first round if I tried. :)

  26. Yay team!!!!! I am so happy they won, and that you got some signs back. Those pictures are great, too.

I used to watch Cupcake Wars all the time but haven't in a long time. I loved seeing the different ingredients and decorations they'd use. I always tried to invent my own. haha
