Writing a Superhero Novel

12:00 AM Elizabeth Seckman 53 Comments

Welcome Nicole! She's got a new book you will want to know about....

Nowadays, superheroes are everywhere: movies, graphic novels, comic books… why not novels too?

All you have to do is create a superhero. Mix and mash a bunch of cool powers, create a costume, come up with a name and you're good to go, right?

Not exactly. You don't want your superhero to be too perfect, to have to many powers, to not have too easy a time taking down the villain. (Yeah, gotta create a villain too.)

And the hero's (and villain's) origin has to be original and believable. There's gotta be high stakes too. A ticking bomb – sometimes literally.

Don't forget the puny humans. The side characters need to have true supporting roles so we care about them as much as the hero.

Writing superhero novels has been so much fun that I might just write another one separate from the trilogy when I'm done.

Have you ever thought about writing a superhero story?

BLURB:

After destroying Skull Krusher, Nicholas Adams thinks Falledge is safe and becomes a security guard at the museum, watching a valuable statue. Unfortunately, the Egyptian statue houses the soul of a scorned witch, biding her time to have her revenge on the descendants of her cheating lover.

Kiya the witch isn't the only new foe in town as the drug that created Skull Krusher has now transformed a scientist into yet another monster, forcing Nicholas to don his Black Hellebore mask again and save Falledge.

Nicholas has no help this time as Kiya gains possession of his love Julianna's body and brings the soul of Justina, Nicholas's high school sweetheart and Julianna's twin, with her. Despite himself, Nicholas is torn between the sisters. If he can't stop the fiends from taking over the world and destroying humankind, he'd never be able to find lasting, true love.

Misha Gericke and Beth Fred host a monthly blog hop that's meant to support each other and keep ourselves looking forward and staying on track.

The last Friday of each month, tell the hop members how you've done- like a Weight Watchers weigh in. Time to put the cookies down and tell us how well you've done.

This is my first month, so I'm just going to look ahead and make a few plans for the month of May.

May?!

Yes, May. Sigh.

My personal life will be busy in May. Boy #2, Cole, will graduate from high school. 1) I will have him a party. 2) I will remember to send out his graduation announcements. 3) I do not promise to paint the bathroom and kitchen by said party time. I had planned on that last year, but really, I was lying to myself.

Boy #1, Caleb, comes home from college at the beginning of May. Yay!! 4) I plan to switch to a summer post schedule of once a week. Last year I tried to manage all things and just brain fried out. Pacing. That's my new goal ;)

5) Bella's Point should be in he midst of edits and I should start planning a bit of a launch. Thinking of doing a blog hop rather than a tour. But without a hard release date, that's tough to plan. Maybe plan on the end of June....

6) Finish the first draft of Defying Reason, my NA attempt.

7) One more...for a lucky seven! Finish up all my promised beta reads. Slow reading is such a pain!

Now, let's see if I accomplish my goals next month! This was fun. Join us HERE!

Holy sand man, I almost forgot! Missy Davis, Lindsay Anne Kendal, and myself are having a Facebook party next Saturday May 3 from 3:00-8:00 pm US Eastern time.

We've invited lots of readers and writers and hope it's an opportunity to mingle with each other and maybe meat some new readers.

We're looking for authors and bloggers who would like to stop by and say hi and who would like to throw in a give away, an ebook or what not. If you'd like to participate, say so in the comments...and leave an email, unless I already stalk you ;)

Should be fun!

  1. I'll check out the Facebook Book Blast.

Congrats to Nicole. I've never written a superhero novel, but it sounds like fun.

    1. I don't think I could do it. My brain is burdened by reality. It's like there is a whole realm of creativity that I don't have the map for.

  2. I'm not on Facebook, but that sounds like fun, Elizabeth.
I've not even thought of trying a superhero novel, but never say never.
Still thinking about the 'Goals' hop, but LOL Elizabeth, I'm always lying to myself when I set goals (my painting goal of ten years ago is still standing).
Thanks for your tip again. I now have indicated the genre and price of my book on the sidebar.
    Enjoy Cole's graduation party.

    1. I have a box with stuff to redo the bathroom, the basement, and the downstairs bathroom...I was supposed to complete those projects three years ago and haven't even started. But at least I can say I am never bored!

I haven;t even added the price of mine to my side bar. I was thinking the sale price, but you know adding the regular price isn't a bad idea. Glad I sort of thought of it.

    2. Fanny, I never say never concerning genres. :)

  3. Sounds like a busy time! I wouldn't ever consider a superhero novel, because I'm too in awe of the superheroes that already exist!

    1. I know, and I lack that creative spirit that can leap reality (and be faster than a speeding bullet!)

    2. There are so many wonderful superheroes that already exist!

  4. Hey Elizabeth,

I'm truly sorry I've not been able to comment on your blog as much as I'd like. Ironically, I've been fending of the powers of that superhero, "Alphabet Dude."

Wishing Nicole all the very best with her endeavour. Actually living with a superhero dog, I can relate.

    Blog hop alert! Argggghhhhh!!!! LOL

I see you are having a Farcebook party. Maybe I might crash the party!

    1. Never fear my dear Gary! I know you'll stop by sometime. And I know you're busy with your move and the tragic separation with your better half and furry cohort, Penny.

You better come to the Facebook party! Oh the fun you will bring :)

  5. Actually, I'm working on a superhero-ish novel too and all your points are spot on, Elizabeth. Congrats to Nicole and her book sounds like something I'd have more than a passing interest in :)

    1. They are all good points, but I can't take the credit. Those were written by Nicole. In all my cutting and pasting, I forgot to intro her. Bad Elizabeth!

I remember reading about your story...a western slant to it, right? Or am I crazy? It sounded great. Can't wait to read it. :)

    2. Good luck with your superhero-ish novel, Mark! :)

  6. I think I'll create Super Curmudgeon. A cranky author that drinks coffee by the carafe, and writes a couple novels in his spare time every afternoon, after putting bank robbers and terrorists in the clink in the morning.

    1. Love that idea!

(I just bought myself a carafe. I mean that whole getting up and walking to the kitchen was too much. Now I have a hot brew right beside me all day!)

    2. I'd read about Super Curmudgeon!

  7. Superman is my hero. Don't need another one. I cannot imagine the work trying to create a competitor for all the superheros already around.

  8. I've always wanted to write a superhero story.
Lots of good things happening with your son.
Whatever you plan to do for your book's release, I'm here to help!

    1. You should totally write one! I know you could do it.

Yep, my son is keeping me busy. Helps to nip the melancholy...no time to think!

Thanks for the offer to help. You're a super hero yourself :)

  9. I've thought about it too, great points, I just do the superheros in the kids ones for now

    ReplyDelete

    1. I was going to say...you already write super heroes. I think writing for kids is tougher than writing for adults. I wrote a little story for my kids and they were too honest in their opinion of it's suckage.

    2. On my to-write list is a series about MG superheroes. :D Yay for superheroes whether big or small!

  10. I had a super-hero/mom type of character in the works for a while now. Not sure if I will ever finish that. But it is fun to play with.

I love your list! You make me feel normal with all you have on it to accomplish. I bet you are eager for Caleb to come home. I am not sure how I will do when my girls go away to college. I might become a creepy stalker and just show up ...

    1. A super hero mom? Sounds cool. With your wit, I bet that would be an awesome story!

I am eager for Caleb to come home. It feels good to have them all together, especially since I know those days are numbered.

I used to think I'd be the creepy, stalker mom. Everybody in my family bet I would too! But it's all good. I have built a pretty solid relationship with my kids, so I feel at ease watching them grow on their own. They semi-sort of keep me in the loop and it is satisfying seeing them chase their dreams.

  11. I've thought about superhero stories, but haven't figured out any good ones yet.

The facebook party sounds fun! I don't know that I'd be able to attend the entire length of time, but I'll throw in an ebook to give away.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Thanks Loni! I won't be able to attend the whole time either...there are three of us splitting up the time. But it would be great if you stopped by. I'll have to go find you on facebook. Are we friends there?

    2. Keep at it, Loin, you'll think of something. ;)

  12. I'll read 'em. Not interested in writing them.

  13. I'm not a fan of superhero stories but then I used to say the same thing about paranormal stories and now I'm obsessed with them. Never say never I guess. :D

You have so much happening in May! Good luck with all of it and most importantly have a great time with your sons. :)

    1. I've read a few superhero stories. I prefer to wait until they are made into movies. I honestly think I lack the creative brain to take the words only and "see" the really far out stuff...like when I read X-Men Jewels of Cytorak and they described the spandex suits, my brain created the silliest looks. But put them in a comic or a movie and it's cool.

I do have a lot going on in May. I've been trying to stay on top of things better, ignoring the mopey beast who wants me to just stare into space and miss the toddler red head. Enjoy the present!

    2. I'll read (and write) just about anything. :)

  14. HI, Elizabeth...

Super heroes are wonderful! We all need to believe that good is out there to triumph over evil!

  16. Congratulations, Nicole! I wrote a very short superhero story once but no more than that (although I bet they are fun!)

I'm not much of a FBer, but I'm sure everyone will have tons of fun. As to goals. . .Lol! I can make them, but the chances they'll be achieved is so close to zero, it hurts. Better to go with the flow ;)
But glad you made yours! Go get May!!!

    1. I can make them too...we shall see how well I execute. It will be fun to see if I can hold myself accountable.

  17. Congratulations to Nicole! Your first superhero book was great. Can't wait to read the next one!

Great goals, Elizabeth. I can't believe there's only one month left of school and then it's summer break. I've already prepared a trip back to see my family, but now to plan other summer activities. I figure if we keep busy, we'll make it through somewhat intact!

    1. Nicole's books are on my list!

I know. I wasn't looking forward to this summer break hitting...I'll have one more leaving for college in the fall. It all goes by so quickly! But since there's no stopping it, we may as well enjoy. I bet you'll survive just fine :)

You know I'm totally behind you, and lady, I've got a Writerly Wednesday with your name on it either July 2nd or July 9th, if you'd like it. Let me know and I'll ink it in. Yay! It's going to be a wild, wild summer.

So, do you let your kids have a summer break or keep making them learn all summer?
