Short and Simple...Like Me ;)

11:29 AM Elizabeth Seckman 30 Comments

See? In pictures...it looks reddish.
Right?
Sometimes my attempts at frugality bite me   square on the butt.

I bought futons for the man cave on               clearance.

Deep clearance.

Like half off.

I was excited about my savings until I was     excoriated by my bunch of guys...guys who   consider SpaghettiO's and boxed food  fine dining...for my purchase.

Yeah, yeah, they were hot pink, though in   my  defense, the catalog said they were   magenta.

Who knew magenta and hot pink were synonymous?!

Not me.

Okay, so I knew they'd be in the pink family. I just didn't think they'd be quite so pink...or that it would matter!

I mean, Come on! Since when do my boys care about style? They are impressed with their pit stench, yet the idea of sitting on extremely reasonably priced furniture causes a full on rebellion?

I tried to make peace by offering to add some throw pillows...maybe something black...perhaps camouflage?

No dice...they took their mutiny to their father.

New covers are ordered and on the way.

****

Then this weekend we took our eldest over to Morgantown to get his furniture and stuff moved in so he's ready for August's back to school.

Sigh.

In June, I toured said apartment and to be helpful, I turned the AC up to 90 degrees to save on the electric bill.

My husband, Mr. Knows Everything, points out immediately, "Honey, this place has no AC. There are no air vents."

"Yes, yes! There they are...on the floor!" I pointed out enthusiastically.

"Those are space heaters." He says with a smirk and a less than well stifled giggle.

Oh, so it seems I turned the heat up to 90 degrees and the heater ran half the summer keeping the place a nice, toasty, dessert like temperature.

I guess that explains the higher than expected electric bill...that I will be paying.

****

So, let's do the Visa re-cap, shall we?

Manly futon covers? $74.00

Electric bill? $101.00

The pleasure my stupidity has brought to Mr. Seckman? Evidently priceless.

Because he's still giggling.

Like a ten-year-old girl.

Fiction Friday! Alexandrea Weis

Alex and one of her rescued babies
Today I'd like to welcome Alexandrea Weis!

Alex is a writer and an advanced practice registered nurse. If that isn't enough to impress you, she is also a permitted wild life rehabber in her home state of Louisiana. Still not enough? Check out this:

Recovery  won the Gold Medal for best romantic suspense from The Reader’s Favorite Book Awards 2011, and was named best Romantic Suspense novel by the Spring 2011 NABE Pinnacle Book Awards. Broken Wings, won best Contemporary Romance by the NABE Pinnacle Book Awards in 2012, was a Silver Medal winner in the ForeWord Magazine Book of the Year Awards for Romance, as well as a finalist in the USA Book Awards for Romance in 2012, and a finalist in the Reader’s Favorite Book Awards for Contemporary Romance for 2012. Diary of a One-Night Stand, was released in August 2012 and was named a Paranormal Romance Guild’s Best Reviewed of 2012. Her last novel, Acadian Waltz was a Readers’ Favorite Book Awards finalist for Best Contemporary Romance and Best Southern Fiction.

Whew! I'm tired from writing all that, so let's turn things over to Alex for a little history you do NOT want to miss :)

My father had an independent production company in the French Quarter of New Orleans. Being raised in the motion picture business, I learned how to run sound, do basic cinematography, film editing, and to be an all-around gopher on the set. Sometimes, I even did some in front of the camera work as a bit player and background extra.

Because of his work in movies, many creative people in the French Quarter gravitated toward my father’s Creole cottage on Dumaine Street. I grew up associating with Jazz musicians, actors, writers, and talented artists. But probably the person who influenced me most during that time was my father’s good friend, Tennessee Williams.

He was a kind and patient man who would sit with me for hours discussing the intricacies of his writing. From him, I learned about character development and the value of good dialogue. He taught me how to build personalities into characters that would resonate with readers. He showed me the importance of searching for the right words to best reflect the idiosyncrasies of each and every character. Funny, how you can forget so much from so many, but I remember every bit of advice Tennessee Williams taught me.

Looking back, I can see the synchronicity of circumstance having set my course in this creative direction from a very early age. If I had not been born in the city of New Orleans to a motion picture making father, or raised amid the bohemian people of that uniquely eccentric society, I might not have evolved into the writer I am today.

However, I did not always embrace my creative side, and for years pursued a career based in medicine and practical knowledge. But like pressurized lava simmering beneath the surface of some volcano, the innate creativity I was born with eventually came erupting to the surface. I finally let go of my apprehensions about turning away from my medical training and started to embrace my stifled urges. It was then I re-discovered my writing.

I came to realize that happiness is not found in living some monetary-based lifestyle, but in following a path that yields to the yearnings of your heart. We are all born to do something fortuitous on this planet; we just have to stop trying to wonder what that is, and just do what makes us happy. After all, happiness is always the outcome when you finally learn to follow your dreams.

Off to London! Or wherever it is Annalisa lives...

'Ello chums!

There's partying going on in Merry Ol' England  with the birth of the new royal babe!

I was going to hop an international flight, grab me a pint o' ale and lift it in a toast to a celebrating nation.

But that takes time...and a passport...and sadly I have neither!!

Instead, I'm traveling via the web and hanging out with a wonderful friend (and talented writer!), Annalisa Crawford, as her guest blogger today.

We're talking pig magnets and weight gain. You won't want to miss that, eh?

Click your heels together three times and say, "I want to go to Cornwall"

If that doesn't work...click HERE

(So Annalisa, how did I do? I could have gone the ultra Americana version and started off with, "Howdy Pilgrims". Hmm...maybe next time.)

Happy Birthday Hillbillies!

Capital building in Charleston, WV

 Happy 150th Birthday West Virginia!!!

It's our time to celebrate...and remind the world that we are NOT part of Virginia.

This is West Virginia-

Find the Map Man Here!

This is Virginia-

From Enchanted Learning

We are no longer united. We are two independent states sitting
side-by-side...border to border.

Holy smokes!! When did that happen?

Well, here's a quick history...in a nutshell:

Once upon a time, there was unity in the Virginias...

But then this little skirmish called the Civil War broke out.

And well, Mountaineers are always free, but they aren't exactly rebels. No matter how irate we get with the excessive laws and the taxes set by the feds...hillbillies still have loyalty to this flag.

Old Glory

So, what's a patriot to do when the south votes on secession?

Well, you secede yourself. On October 24, 1861 WV declared they were no longer part of Virginia.

It wasn't a popular idea outside the state...even Abe Lincoln wasn't a fan!

But we had rail roads, and the war was heating up, soooo...

Welcome West by God Virginia to the Union as the 35th state!

Woo hoo! And hell yeah. After court hearings and arguments...

On June 20, 1863 West Virginia was officially a state.

Sadly, that's only given the rest of the nation 150 years to get used to the fact that WEST Virginia is NOT just the western part of the southern state of Virginia. Just listen to ESPN's Brad Nessler:

As a wise WV commenter on YouTube said to Brad's gaffe, "Cut him a break. We became a state when he was just a baby."

But we won't complain- John Denver showed us some love. ;)

*and for all the wise-apples who say he was he was singing about Virginia...check your geography: the Shenandoah River runs through the Eastern Panhandle and so do the Blue Ridge Mountains

Cassie Mae & Butt Stamping

12:00 AM Elizabeth Seckman 39 Comments

Welcome to Ms. Cassie Mae!
She's here to answer a few questions...
they're short and sweet,
just like us :)

Cassie Mae!!
Read more about her
HERE!!
 1. Marketing. You're a natural at making readers your loyal friends. Any tips on how other writers can work your magic?

Readers ARE my friends. I wrote my book for me, but also for them. So when they take the time to comment on my author page, or email me, I take the time to respond because they are what make me love writing. The tip is simply interaction.

2. Best reader feedback (and don't use mine...I don't want to be a glory hog ya know ;)

There are so many (that was so not supposed to sound cocky, but it probably came out that way) but it was probably when one of my readers emailed me with a list of reasons why she fell for my book, and she included the fact that I answered a question she had for me when she finished. Again, the interaction thing, but also, I felt extremely humbled after that… and bawled like a baby! LOL.

3.  You've done self publishing and traditional publishing. Can you give me a plus and minus for each one?

Self publishing Con: Limited resources. I have to do everything myself and I can only do so much. And pirating sites are awful, and I have to deal with them all by my lonesome.

Self publishing Pro: I get to keep the majority percentage of my sales. I have full control over my cover, my publishing date, my pricing. And I can keep my titles :)

Traditional publishing Con: Lots of waiting. Lots and lots of waiting. Waiting for edits. Waiting for cover art. Waiting for publishing date.

Traditional publishing Pro: The awesome team I have behind me. My cover artist, my publicist, my marketing team, my editor, my agent. They get me spots and interviews I couldn’t get myself, and they make sure my book is not pirated! I’m left with the fun stuff… which is talking to my readers and writing books :)

4. You're a busy, busy lady! Four books in one year, a couple of cutie pie little boys, and a new baby girl...wow!

You wanna just nap a minute and I'll entertain everyone with a dramatic reading of the morning wood excerpt from your latest masterpiece?

No? Fine. What's the secret, how are you balancing it all?

I’m not, haha! Really, I do what I can when I can, and I have a great group of critique partners who keep me sane when I lose it. Which probably happens once a week.

5. If you were going to adorn those hot little sweat pants you're wearing like the teens you write about, what would you stamp on your butt?

Sweet Cheeks :)

Catch-Up

12:00 AM Elizabeth Seckman 44 Comments

Holy moley!! It's already mid-July!!

I'm still shaking my head and wondering where the time went.

I know for me, It wasn't spent catching up on laundry...or finishing up the spring cleaning to-do list.

Or even wrapping up the rafflecopter give-aways I promised.

Sad, I know.

BUT! Better late than never! Even though you all have probably forgotten, I want to make sure I give away the stuff I promised.

So, here are the winners:

The winner of the e-copy of Mary Ting's highly rated story, Crossroads is Tonja Drecker!!

The winner of the e-copy of Celeste Holloway's most wonderful, five star read, Sebastian Falls and $25 Amazon gift card is Jill Campbell-Chambers!!

And the final give-away...

Well, I have a confession to make...

Okay, so I have four teenage boys, right?

And they have been living in a house that has been crazy busy...where the phrase, "Mom, are there any clean clothes?" is heard almost as often as, "Mom, is there anything to eat?"

Sooo...when I bought a tee-shirt as a give away to support the Help Ben Walk! fund, I left the tee, in its package, on the dining room table while awaiting the name of the winner.

Now, let me explain about my guys:

Original message: BOYS! DO NOT EAT
Edited Message: BOYS! DO EAT quickly without asking.
Modified by Cole Seckman

I make things all the time for schools, boosters, church feeds and what-not. And countless times, when an item is left to cool or be delivered...my guys have eaten it.

Nothing is more embarrassing than taking a cake with a piece cut out or thirty pepperoni rolls when fifty were promised and the sad explanation, "I'm sorry, my guys found the plate unguarded and nipped a bite when I wasn't looking."

So, with the backed-up laundry and a new tee sitting pretty in its package...

you see where this is going?

One of my boys, who for fear of public shaming shall remain nameless, grabbed the shirt after his shower and wore it.

Fortunately for me...and for the offending child who had the gall to request a larger size...the winner of the once worn, but quickly removed and laundered tee is the always sweet, always good-natured Michael Di Gesu!

(Here I thought- "sorry the kids nipped a bite"- was bad...oy!!)

Now I am off to work on that laundry pile and make a trip to the grocery store.

I know...I know...my life is glamorous...try not to be a hater. ;)

Hello! I Should Be Going to Bed

3:40 AM Elizabeth Seckman 48 Comments

Makes it worth the effort :)
The craziness continues...but thanks to all of you-

I'm smiling through it all. :)

I haven't been around much, not because I've gone under ground or given up.

Nope, just been crazy busy.

Family visits, reunions...my niece's "flip cup" party.
(flip cup is a drinking game. I'd never played, so boy #1 coaches me on how to flip the cup and advises me to stick with wine coolers over beer...chugging beer will make me belch all night...hmm...must find out if knowledge is from the grapevine or experience...guess that's a post for later!)

And it's also time to enjoy the WRiTE CLUB battles of words!

Who will get knocked out? Who will win the title?

Check out the competitors, add your voice, and vote HERE!

Thanks to DL Hammons for the opportunity to be a preliminary judge!

It was fun..and educational.

(That will also be a post for another time too!)

And I have prizes to hand out.

Can you believe I forgot to check my rafflecopters?

It's all right if you thought "YES!"

It only proves you know me well.

Wow! I have a lot to catch up on...maybe after this fun festive week?

But have no worries.
I will be back-
I've decided writing isn't just a job...it's an obsession.

It's past three in the morning as I finish up...
adding a few silly things just seems
wee hours of the morning
appropriate ;)

Free to Be Mimsical

12:00 AM Elizabeth Seckman 24 Comments

Hello Seckmanaholics,

I’m doing a special Christmas in July tour, and Elizabeth has allowed me to crash on her metaphorical couch.

Her sexy couch!

I’m actually kind of excited to be writing on our nation’s birthday, well alright it’s not TECHNICALLY the U.S.’s birthday, but let’s just roll with it. Because I want to talk about America.

 “You’re all weirdoes”

I love my country. I really do. I mean, where else could someone like me write a series of books about a low-rent private investigator who solves mysteries, flirts, and makes pop culture references about Moonlighting?

On sale, right now over at Amazon!

And I’m so proud to have been born and raised in the states, having a pretty rich cultural background. I’ve got German, Irish, Dutch, English and even Cherokee ancestry. I’m just a big ole melting pot.

And a sexy beast.

Is America perfect? Not by a long shot. Have we always done the right thing? Hah, not even close. Would I trade living here for anywhere else? Absolutely not!

So, in closing, let me just throw this out there. Where else but America could everyone’s sweetheart Bill Pullman have the most awesome speech ever, as brought to us by a German filmmaker.

Jay Mims doesn’t know the meaning of the word quit! He lives with a passive-aggressive Dalek named Steve, and when not writing is learning the mandolin. He writes books and is far funnier on Facebook then in real life. He is terrible at Twitter. His next book "The Gray Ghost Inn" is due out October 15, 2013. Feel free to email him here.

A Mickey Mouse Operation: IWSG

The Insecure Writer's Support Group  posts the first Wednesday of each month.
Hello and thanks to our host, Alex Cavanaugh and to his co-hosts, Nancy ThompsonMark Koopmans, and Heather Gardner.

Last week my day started with me stepping in poop, and even though plenty of people wished me "hope your day gets better"s...it didn't.

Honestly, it got worse.

In my rush to pack and send boy #2 (Cole) out the door and on his way to Florida, he got a mediocre dinner and fresh-from-the-dryer-before-the-waist-band-dried swim trunks to stuff in his bag as we ran to catch his bus.

Next stop...Disney World!
We did a quick check: undies, sun block, wallet, Disney confirmation.

All good!

Or so we thought.

Cole ordered his tickets to Disney online and forgot to put the card back in his wallet.

I never thought of it. I'd been busy all day making sure I got chapter edits into the publisher.

So, off my three-hundred pound lineman goes with $100 in his pocket and a week's worth of meals to buy ahead of him.

He could stretch it and make it last, right?

Real soon, I start having visions of him partying like the Donner's and fear for the safety of his room mates.

But it's almost midnight and nothing I can do, so I head to Mail Chimp to work on making myself a nice, professional newsletter to let my readers know a new book is coming soon.

Problem was, I was as clumsy and confused on the site as a monkey is with his opposable thumbs. Yeah, he's got them, but beyond picking bugs off his neighbor, he doesn't really know how to use them.

That was me. I was filling in the boxes, but had no clue what I was doing.

Still reeling from sending my boy off in a frenzy, I realize my life is more upside-down because I'm constantly busy trying to make this writing thing happen.

I had to ask myself: is it worth it?

Am I wasting my time? Bringing unnecessary chaos to my family? Should I go back to social work where the toughest day was talking a teen off a ledge...I mean that I was good at!

Writing? In this, I feel like I'm in over my head.

Am I even smart enough to do it, because come on...let's be honest...writing goes way beyond putting words on paper.

Stressed and fed up, I headed to Facebook to whine to my fellow Daydreamers*.

Pretty soon I was surrounded by support and the fabulous Brinda Berry even posted, "shoot me an email if you need help".

I wanted to cry. People are too good to me.

The next day, the sun rose and I made arrangements to wire money to Cole.

It cost me $12 to put another couple hundred in his pocket.

But I had to do it...the child had to eat.

Cole and Ms. Pre-Med

And he sent me this thanks after dinner. He assured me this little lady is working her way through med school, so leaving a big tip was for a good cause.

See? It's turning out all right.

I'm raising socially conscious boys who will learn to double check their bags for themselves.

Or that you can fail, and there will always be friends (or parents) to help you out.

And then there is the ultimate truth: the crazier life gets...the better the story.

*Daydreamers Anonymous is a private Facebook page for serious writers who want support. To get an invite, find a daydreamer (like myself), befriend them and ask them to bring you in. It's that easy...you don't even have to know the secret hand shake.
