On this day, St. Valentine, the Christian Saint of love, epilepsy, and beekeepers was beheaded. So romantic, I know! Anyhow, his feast day, the day celebrating his martyrdom has become the biggest holiday for lovers everywhere. Which makes total sense because so many people lose their heads when they lose their hearts.
In keeping with the true spirit of St. Valentine's Day, might I suggest a last-minute romantic get-a-way? Visit the Santa Maria in Cosmedin in the lovely city of Rome. Cosmedin comes from the Greek word "kosmidion" or ornamented. The website says the ornamentation refers to the lovely interior of the chapel itself, but I think it's because there in the church in a lovely glass container is the severed skull of St. Valentine himself decorated with flowers.
Still not romantic enough?
While you're visiting Santa Maria in Cosmedin, stop by the Bocca della Verita, or the Mouth of Truth. Legend says if you place your hand in the mouth and tell a lie, the mouth snaps shut and you lose your hand. What better place to test your lover's faithfulness?

Big News!
Years ago, when I first started blogging, I ran across a book launch. Intrigued by the story, I bought the e-book, read it, and fell in love. I emailed the writer and asked for a paperback version, because I like to put the books I enjoy on my to-be-read-again-later shelf. The author messaged me back and said, sadly, the book was on digital and wouldn't go to print.
Until now.
That book is finally being published in all versions!
Guaranteed, I will be one of the first to purchase the paperback copy when it comes out.
Until then...
Let's see that cover!

You know those old Looney
Tunes cartoons, where the
angels and devils sit on the
characters' shoulders and
try to talk them into doing

Josephine looked at those
cartoons and said "know
what would make this
better? Relationship drama
and romance!"

I'm amused by your blog title given you are shouting out my books today. LOL Thank you.
ReplyDeleteI thought the same thing! They're not your average love stories.
DeleteSo Happy Lose Your Head Day would be fitting? lol
ReplyDeleteThat would have been a much better title.
DeleteHappy Valentine's Day, Elizabeth! I prefer to keep my head, though.
ReplyDeleteLove,
Janie
I prefer to keep my head as well.
DeleteCongratulations to both ladies!
ReplyDeleteI'm keeping my head as well.
Yes, we should all keep our heads!
DeleteHappy Beheading Day to you, too! Thanks for the reading suggestions.
ReplyDeleteTo you too! And you're welcome :)
DeleteI think we should really be celebrating the beekeeping side of St Valentine!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for the shout out, and for your continual support for Cat.
It gives a whole new meaning to Bee My Valentine, right?
DeleteI'm happy to support the Cat.
Beheading Day! That would be better. My husband says if he doesn't love me every day of the year, heaping it on during Valentine's Day won't make a difference.
ReplyDeleteCongrats to Annalisa and Patricia.
I'll take any chance I can get to be spoiled. LOL
DeleteI thoroughly enjoyed your take on (and your title of) Valentine' Day. Thanks for also introducing me to two new authors, Elizabeth.
ReplyDeleteMy pleasure to spread the word!
DeleteAnd a Happy Beheading Day to you too:)
ReplyDeleteOh, how we lavish ourselves in the sacrifices of others. :)
DeleteI learned about the Mouth of Truth in the movie Only You - I would love to see it one day!
ReplyDeleteHave I seen that movie? I'm going to have to check...
DeleteGood on you for getting the paperback of Cat and The Dreamer. I'm currently reading her current release. She's excellent:)
ReplyDeleteIsn't it a wonderful story? I love it!

ReplyDeleteIt is for sure. Wishing Patricia much success.
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteWhat romance there is in history! Decorating St Valentine's skull with flowers reminds me of the Day of the Dead.
ReplyDeleteIt does! Amazing how similar cultures that never had contact with each other can be.
Delete"So many people lose their heads when they lose their hearts" - truer words were never written. A belated Happy Beheading Day!
ReplyDeleteI think headless romantics are quite common.
DeleteThat was an attention grabbing title for a post, Elizabeth! It was interesting to learn the story of St. Valentine. I have found that different churches in Italy have really interesting relics. If I get back to Rome, I'll have find St. Valentine. I hope you had a happy Valentine's Day.
ReplyDeleteI would love to visit Europe and see all of the tourist spots, though it would probably take years to see it all.
DeleteTerrible to say, but I bet my partner would be more into celebrating Beheading Day than our traditional Valentine's Day....
ReplyDeleteIn your partner's defense, Valentine's Day has become a bit of a commercial nightmare more than a true show of love and devotion.
DeleteSevered skull decorated with flowers, hey? Sounds like there's a story in there somewhere:)
ReplyDeleteThat's a good point. I had assumed it was decorative, but there probably is symbolism behind the flowers.
