Not Guilty

Lee's book reminded me how hard it is to be a teenager. Devon, the MC, goes from feeling like he owns the world to everything crashing down around him when a fight with his girlfriend leads him to a rash decision that costs him his freedom. That's why being young is hard. Every emotion is raw and every situation is new. Experience is a great teacher and life is still hitting them with the experiences they'll need to live through to learn they can adapt, overcome, and survive.

They're still building their data bases, so to speak. But until they do, their brains are like quick spinning data bases with inadequate stores of information. And that's what gets young Devon in a pickle.

I always enjoy Lee's books. She knows how to spin a tale filled characters who are likable, but still flawed enough to be genuine. This is a great reminder that even good kids can get caught up in bad situations.

C. Lee McKenzie has a background in Linguistics and Inter-Cultural Communication, but these days her greatest passion is writing for young readers. She has published five young adult novels: Sliding on the Edge, The Princess of Las Pulgas, Double Negative, and Sudden Secrets. Not Guilty is her most recent one.

Sometimes she likes to jump into the world of the fantastic and when she does, she writes for the middle-grade reader. Some Very Messy Medieval Magick is the third book in the time-travel adventures of Pete and Weasel, with Alligators Overhead and The Great Time Lock Disaster being the first two. Sign of the Green Dragon, a stand-alone, takes the reader into ancient Chinese dragon myths and a quest for treasure.

When she’s not writing she’s hiking or traveling or practicing yoga or asking a lot of questions about things she still doesn’t understand.
