Some Good Things!
Let's take a moment to share. We're friends, so I can be honest...
sometimes small things please me. Not often, but it DOES happen. Here are a few:
1.
No. I have NOT lost my mind. Yes, that's meat. My husband is a farmer by heritage, so he grinds our burger and sausage himself.
And he is kind enough to make some of them into patties for quick meals. This winter, he ran out of wax paper to separate the patties, so he used sandwich bags. Talk about genius! You don't even have to thaw them. Pull one from the freezer, peel off the plastic, and it's ready to cook!

The excitement continues with a bottle of oil! I use cast iron cook ware, so if it ever gets "too scrubbed", I have to wipe it down with oil to re-season. In a hurry, I used the aerosol spray can of cooking oil instead. I stuck the cast iron pot in the cabinet and pulled it out a week or so later. The spray grease hadn't soaked in...it was all gummed up- stuck like gooey, undigestible honey to the sides. Gross. I imagined this in my family's blood vessels and went straight to the internet and searched out different non-aerosol misters. Some leaked, some dribbled, and others just plain didn't work. But this little beauty...the MISTO, worked like a charm.
3. Last, but certainly not least...I loved this little eBook. I'm a big fan of Rachelle Gardner. I find her honesty and smarts about the publishing business refreshingly devoid of the "you stinky peon, why are you wasting the time of real writers" attitude I often feel from other agents.
I love this book. It's laid out simply and honestly. Both sides of the publishing biz are represented (traditional vs. self-pubbed) in a straight-forward lay out. *Which reminds me...I was perusing the book reviews and found one that suggested Ms. Gardner was biased toward the traditional route. This made me pause a moment...because the book is self-published!
Yeah, that made me giggle.
Told ya! I get amused by small things...but only sometimes.
That seperate patty idea is great! Now, I have to make room in my freezer ;)

DeleteVery fun post. Great idea for the patties and nice that you get such fresh beef! You are making me rethink my spray choices. Blech. Speaking of which, I need to season my cast iron pan too. I always heard you should put it in the oven on a low setting. Your method sounds much easier. Finally, I really like Rachelle Gardner's posts and read her blog regularly. I'll need to check out this book!

I spray mine down then leave it in the oven. And I never use soap unless it's really icky.
DeleteAnd yes, you should get the book. My favorite part (which I failed to mention!) was the resource list in the back of the book. Such a handy guide!
Nice list. I'd love to have someone making their own burgers. It sounds so efficient and money saving.
ReplyDeleteAnd if you're like me, you never decide until it's time to eat what to cook, so thawing a pound of burger for patties is a nightmare.
DeleteOh, I read that book too. It was a little short, but I really liked the honest way she broke it all down. It helped me put my head on straight again too (always useful).

DeleteI think the shortness is one of the things I really liked. I want direct and to the point. Sort of like "Save the Cat".
My wife is one of those amused by the small things type of person. That alone amuses me.

Delete"Stinky peon..." HAHAHAHAHA! I have heard the tone several times but not the words. I kinda like it. I wonder if I can use it with the dwarves. After all, they are stinky sometimes.

I like making my own sausage, too. I haven't done burgers, but should. Misto looks better than what I've been using.

I like to make our own because I don't like fennel or a lot of grease, so this way, they're the way we like them.
