My mother read to me so often, I never really considered it special. Being read to was as natural as being fed dinner. I never thought about much, but after seeing this quote, I now understand why I have a love of books.
Giving books as gifts was standard for my mom, but she'd also buy them as souvenirs when we traveled. She'd always pick up a book from the region about the history or the lore of the place and read it to us on the ride back making every trip memorable and educational.
I know my mom would be happy to know that we are passing the trait onto our next generation.

Beautiful sentiment. I think it works if our kids (old adults now) are any sign. Thanks for the memories and idea to pass on the the great grandkids.

ReplyDeleteI was not surrounded by books growing up, and I'm not sure I remember being read to very much either. (I could be wrong, my early childhood memory is shockingly bad.) I do recall seeking them out myself. I read to my kids constantly, but they both grew up averse to reading. I tried my best!
ReplyDeleteMy mom read to us when we were little but once we could read on our own she stopped. But she was an example because she was always reading, and me and my siblings were voracious readers. I read to my kids kids clear until they were older teens. One son, in particular, was a slow reader but was at the top of the charts in listening comprehension. He's quite the "reader" now because he listens to audiobooks.
