Chewy

Crazy dog. He wanted to go too.

Okay, so at risk of making you all think I'm horribly depressed, I am posting once again about one who has gone on to his great reward, this time via the Rainbow Bridge, which better be a real thing because I want to see my dogs, all my dogs, in Heaven.

This happened a while ago, so I am much less emotional. (I always wait until I'm past the crying stage before I share, because well, I just prefer it that way.)

This summer, Jack, my inheritance from my mother, developed a large tumor on his hind quarters that was inoperable and crippling. By fall, my husband and I had to make the very hard choice of having him put down. A choice that just SUCKS.

But he was suffering and we had to do the right thing and say good bye. He was such a good dog. Loving, loyal, weird as a football bat. He was just a wonderful addition to any home.

Here are a few posts that featured Jack. He was a sweet, loving companion first to my mother, then to us for so many years. You can read more about Jack:
And his story also appeared in the short story anthology How I Met My Other

That was just the reminder portion of the post.

My intention today was not to try to make you sad. I'm writing this post as a nod to corporate humanity.

Before Jack died, he was on several meds that I was getting via auto-ship from Chewy.com . I completely forgot about these shipments, so one day, when the mail arrived, I had a box of dog meds and no old dog to give them to. I messaged Chewy and asked if I could send them back, explaining my mistake. I was totally fine if they said no. They were medicines and may not be restockable. It was my negligence to not cancel the order.

The response from Chewy floored me. I got a very nice email telling me to donate the meds and they would credit my card for the cost of the shipment. Then when I got home from work, there were flowers waiting on me from Christian at Chewy.

Needless to say, if I could buy my groceries from Chewy, I would. That was the sweetest, nicest thing.

They don't sell groceries, but I do have a situation in which I need a give-away. Also this summer, my author page on Facebook was hacked, no, it was more like it was hijacked. Someone hacked my account, made themselves an administrator of my page, and changed the name from Elizabeth Seckman, Author to Elizabeth Seckman Clothes. They were selling undoubtedly fake clothes to people who would see the blue check that proves the page is an authorized account and collect personal info on people through fraudulent purchases.

I couldn't get Facebook to remove the interlopers, so I deleted my entire page. If you've ever had your identity or credit card info stolen, you know it's a total headache and I didn't want my page being complicit in a scam

So, I need likes and I'm running a raffle to get them. My choice? $25 Chewy online gift card. I have no idea if this will work for international winners, we can try. I know it will work within the US.

  1. That was super awesome of them! The first half, I can imagine, but to send flowers on top of everything, just amazing. They knew he was a special dog.

    1. Isn't that amazing? I was floored. If he was from a local company, I'd gone and hugged him.

    1. It is heart breaking to have to choose. I still catch myself wondering...did I decide too soon? Then I remind myself that he couldn't walk anymore. It was well past time. But still...

    1. I hate losing animals. I believe in Heaven, so I don't worry so much over my human peeps, but my furry peeps, I have no guarantees, so that's a struggle for me.

  9. What a wonderful thing for the folks at Chewy to do! I'm so sorry about your loss, Elizabeth. It's so freaking heartbreaking, but at least you will see him again—and all your other pets when you're over 100 years old and you've had enough of this life too!
    Big hugs
    Suzy xx

    1. I like you're thinking Suzy. I always tell my kids I expect a Jubilee for my 100th, then I'll pop off.

  10. That was thoughtful of them. I sent them to a lady who fosters a lot of animals. She was very grateful, so they blessed many with one kindness.

  18. I've known veterinarians who did things like this when a pet died, but for a company to do it is beyond astounding. And wonderful! I wonder if it's a company policy, or if Christian took it upon himself to send flowers just because he's a nice guy? Either way, it's a heartwarming story. I'm really sorry you lost your dog, though, Liz. It's always hard to lose one of our furry kids.

    1. It is hard. To make myself feel better, I stole my son's dog. Or more correctly, I think he took pity on me and said she needed a stable home.

I never thought maybe Christian did it on his own. That's a possibility. I should send a letter to their corporate office too. Just to be on the safe side.

  19. What a great response from that company, not everyone would do that. Losing our fur babies is hard because they're such an intrinsic part of the family. This post reminded me of one of our pups Rudi from the first picture, even before I read it - he had a habit of escaping at any opportunity and got out of the front window on to a small sloping roof at our old house. We lured him back in with treats. Unfortunately, later at our current house, he shot out of the front door one night and was knocked down on the road. I hope he and Jack are running around having fun somewhere.

    1. Hugs, Nick. That is so hard. When I was a little girl, I had a pup who was a darter. Her name was Misty. She got away from me and ran right out in front of a truck and I was close behind her. She was hit by the truck and I was run over by a guy on the sidewalk riding his bike. It scared my parents so bad, I wasn't allowed to have another dog when I was young. They got me a cat.
