Good Things and Goals

From Women After 50 Facebook Page
I am NOT even going to say how surprised I am that September is nearly over. I'll think it, but I'm not going to SAY it, not very often at least.

Join the goals hop!
Let's see...what were my goals for this year?

Weight loss. Bleh. So boring. I should have chosen weight gain. Then I'd have knocked a goal out of the ballpark.

But seriously, I went for my yearly check-up and my weight was lower, but I had to admit that since I turned the calendar page to August, I haven't been exercising.

The doc was like...one half hour a day...
I was like...I don't have a half hour...I might have to miss some TV shows...

Anyhow, check with me next month, maybe I'll have done better.

Writing. I finished a story that has been sitting on my hard drive for a while. Initial beta feedback is good. There is still work to do on it, but I have direction and am excited to finally be making up some good stuff.

I think those were my only goals. I was trying to keep the goals simple.

Or I've forgotten what the goals were. Either way, that's what I'm updating. :D

Thanks to our hosts LexaL.G, and Tonja Drecker for this weekly good things check in!

I wasn't on a train that wrecked.

I wasn't standing by a trashcan bomb.

Every road trip I made, I returned home safely.

Sometimes, I forget to count my blessings. It's not until I hear about someone else's tragedy that I remember how good I've had it this week.

Congratulations to the talented Ashley Chappell! She is re-releasing her awesome YA Sci Fi adventure ALICE WILL on OCTOBER 5!

I loved this book. It's like a divine Harry Potter.

Fourteen year-old Trotter was still just trying to get the hang of the demi-godding business when the apocalypse began. In a world where the gods have withdrawn from humanity, leaving mortals bitter toward magic, she finds herself constantly torn between her human and goddess sides. When the world begins to fade away and she becomes the prime suspect, her search to find the cause and prove her innocence ends up revolving around a mysterious little girl named Alice. Then Trotter discovers that not all of the gods had been as distant as they seemed...

Now, with everyone against her and the gods fighting amongst themselves, Trotter is on her own to save her world and stop a vengeful god from using Alice to destroy everything.

Isn't it fabulous?!
Pre-orders are officially available! Get your own copy at Amazon for only $2.99. Plus she's giving away FREE e-copies of the second book, TILT to everyone who leaves a review for Alice! Email Ashley about the review and she'll send you an early copy just before Tilt is re-released in November.

Ashley Chappell currently resides in Huntsville, AL. When not writing, reviewing, or burying her nose in one of her well-worn Terry Pratchett or Neil Gaiman novels, she can be found sailing with her husband on their boat ‘Dupracity’ (Fans of Kurt Vonnegut will want to ask her what that means).

Jumping to Conclusions

6:00 AM Elizabeth Seckman 48 Comments

Oh, my goodness. That is so bad-- that you have a dirty mind-- but I could not resist.

I am guilty as the next person at jumping to conclusions. Some days, that's all the exercise I get.

For example, when I was in college, we had a large, shared bath/ shower room. When I'd go to shower, I'd leave my post-shower kit (contact solution, moisturizer, etc.) sitting on the ledge above the sinks. One time, I got out of the shower, dug through my basket for my moisturizer and it was gone.

Evidently, someone stole it.

It was there yesterday. Gone today. My brain started running through all the girls on my floor trying to figure out who was the thief. Sure, I knew and loved them all, but somewhere in this gang of friendlies was someone who obviously couldn't be trusted.

Then I went back to my room and there it was-- sitting on my desk.

I wasted precious minutes of my life thinking like a suspicious bitch. Thinking of all the people I knew and thinking bad things about them.

Now, maybe that doesn't seem like a very big deal. But what if I'd opened my mouth and told someone else someone stole something from me? I'd have cast suspicion on people based on nothing more than my own carelessness.

I always think of this moment when I am ready to jump to judgment.

It's always better, always wiser, to take a deep breath and consider the facts before taking action.

1. My mom is still improving. She's in a health center for rehab. She tires easily, but is looking much better.

2. Son #4, Conner, was diagnosed with suspected staph sores from playing football. As a loooong-time football mom, this revelation didn't even ruffle my feathers. Been there, done that-- why does no one sell a tee-shirt? But word spread around town and there was some panic.

3. Yesterday was the first day of fall. I never look forward to fall, but I do enjoy it once it's here. West Virginia may be at its most gorgeous in the fall.

Timeless

From Sunday Funnies and Factoids

From Some Funnies for Your Night

That's right. Today, we're talking time travel. It's an amazing concept I never try to wrap my brain around too tightly. I mean, we all know from watching science fiction that if you go tampering with time, things happen.

Not always good things.

And isn't it a given premise in most movies that if future self bumps into old self, the universe or at least your head will explode?

That's pretty risky for a gal who is afraid of motorcycles and lightning.

That's why, my usual answer to the question...if you could go back in time, what would you change...is NOTHING.

You couldn't talk me into time traveling. I'm all for the linear course.

I also like my coffee black and my peanut butter without jelly.

I'll save the time travelling adventure for books, like Crystal's. I've read the first two books in this series, and I am a fan. I'm so excited for Book 3!

Not excited enough to attempt a time shoot into the future, or anything. I wouldn't time travel for much of anything.

But what about you?

Are you adventurous?

Would you move around in time?

A Romantic Heart

6:00 AM Elizabeth Seckman 50 Comments

Since I've been there, done that...
I suppose I should get the tee shirt.

Okay, so many of you may have noticed my blogging went in the tank over the summer...or maybe you didn't. In that case, the polite thing to do would be to pretend you missed me.

During my absence, I sent another son (son #3, Carter) off to WVU to study forensics. And son #1, Caleb, was prepped and readied for his move to the Big Apple to work on his law degree at NYU.

July-August was simply life on fast-forward.

In the midst of it all, my mom returned from Alaska with her husband, Frank, for an extended visit. The week we took Caleb to New York, my mom wasn't feeling very well. She was admitted to the hospital and in a seeming spiral, went from feeling ill to being incoherent and on a ventilator. It's only been in the last few days that she has started to be responsive and hopefully will be breathing on her own again soon.

Prayers welcome. I totally do prayers.

But, in my fog, I forgot to post this for Stephanie Faris' blog tour. And that's just bad. These are some books the whole world should know about, and these are some of them. I love Stephanie's stories/ They're fun reminder of a simpler time when kids can think up the best dreams and reality is not yet a hindrance.

So, please welcome, Stephanie!!

Why I Still Have a Special Place in My Heart for Romance Novelists
by Stephanie Faris
We met in a middle school classroom. There were only a few of us in those early days and we still weren’t sure what we would call ourselves. All we knew was that we lived in the Nashville area and we wrote romance novels. We were so excited to finally meet other people who did what we did.
That group became Music City Romance Writers, which just celebrated its 20th anniversary. In my early days of writing, those women helped me learn, grow, and survive numerous rejections. MCRW was a chapter of Romance Writers of America, an organization that has chapters across the globe. Like other writing organizations, RWA is geared toward helping writers navigate the rollercoastery life that is writing!
Unlike most writers groups, RWA is filled with women who have to support each other when it often feels like the world is against them. The only snide comments I’ve ever heard about my writing came when I was a romance novelist. Even a year ago, a female author made a mean comment about romance when I brought up that I used to write it. I will defend my romance novelist friends until the day I die. Those women are some of the hardest-working, successful writers I’ve ever met.
Yes, successful. Because romance novels bring in serious money, y’all. Romance novels earn more than a billion dollars a year, making up 13 percent of all adult fiction sales. Many authors have advanced degrees and have found they can make more writing romance than in their chosen field (plus it’s far more fun!).
For women who regularly dismiss romance, consider this: it is one of the few industries run by women for women where numerous professionals are making six-figure salaries. Some of them you’ve never even heard of. There are also many more who are making more than you make at your day job…and they’re doing that work from the comfort of their homes. I’ve seen feminists scoff at the romance genre, but what happens if they stop picturing Fabio and start thinking of it as an actual profession. There are romance novelists making more than CEOs of major corporations and they should be applauded, not ridiculed.

But most of all, I’ll defend romance novelists because they are some of the warmest, most supportive authors you’ll ever meet. If you’ve never read a romance, pick up one and give it a try. You can start with Elizabeth Seckman’s entire library! You may just rethink your position on the genre.

When Piper Morgan has to move to a new town, she is sad to leave behind her friends, but excited for a new adventure. She is determined to have fun, be brave and find new friends.

In Piper Morgan Joins the Circus, Piper learns her mom’s new job will be with the Big Top Circus. She can’t wait to learn all about life under the big top, see all the cool animals, and meet the Little Explorers, the other kids who travel with the show. She’s even more excited to learn that she gets to be a part of the Little Explorers and help them end each show with a routine to get the audience on their feet and dancing along!

In Piper Morgan in Charge, Piper’s mom takes a job in the local elementary school principal’s office. Piper is excited for a new

school and new friends—and is thrilled when she is made an “office helper.” But there is one girl who seems determined to prove she is a better helper—and she just so happens to be the principal’s daughter. Can Piper figure out how to handle being the new girl in town once more?

Stephanie Faris knew she wanted to be an author from a very young age. In fact, her mother often told her to stop reading so much and go outside and play with the other kids. After graduating from Middle Tennessee State University with a Bachelor of Science in broadcast journalism, she somehow found herself working in information technology. But she never stopped writing.

Stephanie is the Simon & Schuster author of 30 Days of No Gossip and 25 Roses. When she isn’t crafting fiction, she writes for a variety of online websites on the topics of business, technology, and her favorite subject of all—fashion. She lives in Nashville with her husband, a sales executive.

1. My mom is doing much better than she was. Whenever I leave the hospital, I tell her to keep breathing. You don't realize how important that is until you can't do it.

2. My kids are settled back in school and seem content.

3. I have some quiet time to write and get back to work, though I miss the chaos. This whole back-to-school thing isn't so great when your kids start leaving their home state. Roots and wings, right?

Keepin' Busy

Welcome to another post for the IWSG- the place where writers gather to share their fears and frustrations.

It would be a perfect get-together if only our fearless ninja-leader, Alex Cavanaugh, sent us all calorie-free chocolate.

The question of the month:
How do you find the time to write in your busy day?

Answer is, honestly, some days...weeks...months, I don't. Writing seems to always take the back burner to all the other to-dos in life. It's tough to find the balance between marketing, editing, business details, and regular-old life.

There are days when I ask myself if I will ever have enough time to get it all done.

It's that question that creates the biggest insecurity.

Will I ever have enough time to do it all? Maybe this writing thing is too big of a task. Too broad a dream. Not to mention until you can make a livable wage at it, it's hard to justify the time it takes to do it properly. So, you're caught in a conundrum...you would devote more time to it if you were guaranteed more money....and you'd make more money if you devoted more time.

So, what's a person to do? Any suggestions? How do you balance it all?

Be sure to stop by and say hi to all the awesome co-hosts (myself includedThe awesome co-hosts for the September 7 posting of the IWSG are C. Lee McKenzie, Rachel Pattison, Elizabeth Seckman, Stephanie Faris, Lori L MacLaughlin, and Elsie Amata!
