Backwoods Jane Austen

Welcome Mary! Or for the sci-fi world, I should say, welcome M. Pax!

How 'bout a West Virginia howdy
for one of my favorite Mountaineer alums?

It really is a small world. When I first started stalking following Mary, I never realized a star-gazing Oregon gal would have attended the same university as my son.

Cool, huh?

What's even cooler is Mary has a new book out! And she agreed to take a minute and do a flash interview, Faster than a Meteor!

I had to ask: You’re a huge Jane Austen fan, where’s the Jane in the Backworlds?

M. Pax:  I am a huge Jane fan and have thought about putting her in space, but Craze didn’t want any of that foo fooey stuff around his bar. So far I’ve complied with his request as I torture him enough as it is. There is love in the Backworlds. Captain Talos gets a girlfriend in Beyond the Edge.

M. Pax-- Inspiring the words she writes, she spends her summers as a star guide at Pine Mountain Observatory in stunning Central Oregon where she lives with the Husband Unit and two demanding cats. She writes science fiction and fantasy mostly. You can find out more by visiting her at:

Beyond the Edge:

Some truths are better left unfound.

For two years Craze’s dear friend, Lepsi, has been missing. The murmurings of a haunted spaceship might be a message and may mean his old pal isn’t dead. The possibility spurs Craze and Captain Talos to travel to uncharted worlds, searching. Out there, in an unfamiliar region of the galaxy beyond the Backworlds, they stumble upon a terrible truth.

Meanwhile, Rainly remains on Pardeep Station as acting planetlord, dealing with the discovery of her lover’s dark and brutal past. Alone and questioning her judgment, her introspection unlocks more than heartache. Latent protocols in her cybernetics activate, forcing her to face a sinister secret of her own.

In the far future, humanity settles the stars, bioengineering its descendents to survive in a harsh universe. This is the fourth book in the science fiction series, The Backworlds. A space opera adventure.

  1. Hey M. Pax, nice feature and maybe Jane Austen is too elegant for the high and grumpy Craze. The cover definitely tugs at the imagination and cool coincidence that you went to the same University as Liz's son. Also I'm glad you found a way to keep Artist Way in for Realms Faerie.

  2. It would be interesting to see Jane in space. Maybe Craze needs to read her books first.

  3. If you can't torture Craze, who can you torture?

  7. Let's goooo Mountaineers! My roots are firmly on the right coast.

Thank you for helping out, Elizabeth. I will find a way to sneak Jane into the Backworlds... actually I already started with her most well-used trope.

I think Jane is to refined for all that dust, Sheena-kay.

Maybe I'll have him do that, Medeia. It would be amusing.

    Exactly, Alex.

    It is, Michelle. Hmmm.

    Thank you, Melissa and Lydia!

  8. Getting more females in the Backworlds should shake things up a bit. I like that little tidbit - Talos gets a girlfriend. That's interesting. Now I'm intrigued even more.
