Thanks to Lexa Cain and our trusty co-hosts, L.G. Keltner of Writing Off The Edge and Katie at Cyborg Mom

1.  I got my teeth cleaned. No cavities! Or at my age? I'm happy none broke. I was eating popcorn at a football game this fall, and my tooth broke. No more grinding kernels. Can't say mom never warned me.

2. We had another blast of snow. Sure, everyone is getting tired of it, but it's still beautiful and there's a special glee in having the school call and cancel.

3. It's Cole's birthday! Oh, my goodness. Baby #2 is nineteen years old!

He went from a ham who was willing to try Alfalfa hair....

To serious guy.
Not really, this is the same ham all grown up practice his "contemplative" face.

Have you read Medeia's new book?

Excellent story. I was expecting the usual story of teen survival, which was good. But then, the story took a twist and I was totally hooked. I was close to the end, but the family wanted dinner, so I had to put the my Kindle on auto read, set it in the kitchen window, and listened to the Kindle version of Siri get me to the end.

I had ideas about what the 52 Likes was all about, but I wasn't even in the same ball park.

Check out Medeia's books Here!

Coach and Cato: An IWSG Post

Coach Bobby Pruett; my baby, Cole; Rakeem Cato
At the WV All-State Banquet

It's IWSG Time!

Thanks to this month's co-host!

Share your insecurities with the world, or at least the many, many fellow writers in the group  ;)
Started by the ninja master, Alex Cavanaugh, the IWSG has grown to include its own website and Facebook group. Check out all the details HERE!

                                            *********

Coach Bobby Pruett and Rakeem Cato. Marshall University fans will know who they are, for those who don't, here's a brief run down of their laurels:

Coach Pruett lead Marshall University to six conference championships, five bowl wins, and is responsible for recruiting such talent as NFL greats, Randy Moss, Chad Pennington, and Byron Leftwich. He is a coaching legend.

Rakeem Cato Marshall University's current quarterback. As a Junior, he's already passed Chad Pennington's touchdown pass record in a single season. The big question at the end of this season was: would Cato come back to MU or move onto to the NFL?

At the All-State Banquet (Cole was an All-State lineman, did I ever mention that? LOL) Coach Pruett and Mr. Cato were honored at the banquet. As each took the stage and spoke, neither of them said, "I woke up one day and bam I was great!"

Nope. Coach Pruett mostly wanted to thank his family for supporting him while he chased his dream. He spoke of years of coaching, getting fired, and moving from one town to another. Finally he made it back to West Virginia to coach Marshall, his life goal. And boy what an excellent job he did! Before Bobby Pruett, few people knew WV had another university other than that one with the Mountaineers.

Cato, seriously one of the most humble men I have ever met, thanked everyone, credited all, and made no praise for himself. But there was a sport's writer who told the tale of his challenges. How he grew up in a hard neighborhood, his mom dying when he was thirteen, and his dad spending most of Cato's life behind bars. All Cato said was he wouldn't be there without the backing of his family, the one related blood and the one bound by turf, and by the help of God.

When you look at these men, you see where they are right now. On top.

It's easy to call them lucky when they are all dressed up and collecting trophies.

What you don't see is the work. The fails. The brushing themselves off. The tenacity to stay in the game.

Class of 2014

I'm visiting the Unicorn Bell  and chatting with the lovely Kristin
Come on over and say hi and sign up for the give away :)

I take great pleasure in introducing my guest blogger, Cole Seckman.
Unbeknownst to Cole, I have copied and pasted his Valedictorian speech from my hard drive to my blog.

Cole is the second Valedictorian in the family. His big brother, Caleb was the valedictorian in 2012 and his address can be found Here.

This year's theme for graduation was based on the Dr. Suess's "The Places You Will Go"...that said, take it away Cole!!

Cole Seckman

“You won’t lag behind, because you’ll have speed.
You’ll pass the whole gang and you’ll soon take the lead.
Wherever you fly, you’ll be the best of the best.
Wherever you go, you will top all the rest.”
                             ~Dr. Seuss

I’ve often heard people say high school is the best time of their life.

I know I will miss walking through the halls of Magnolia. I’ll miss the sound of closing lockers and the chatter in crowded hallways. I’ll especially miss the sound of the dismissal bell at the end of the day.

I will certainly miss that walk from the locker room to the grass of Alumni Field; the sound of coaches’ whistles in practice; and the referees on Friday nights. I’ll even miss hot summer two-a-days and after game lectures. I’ll miss players who are like brothers, and the ones who truly are my brothers.

As for my classmates, most I have known since kindergarten, I will miss you all as we head off on different paths. I think growing up together in a small town develops a special camaraderie that is difficult to duplicate. We know each other’s history and our families. Few classes can say, “there isn’t a stranger in our group.”

And there is no denying, our time at Magnolia High School has been an amazing ride. We’ve accomplished so much from state championships to outstanding academic success.

But the trip isn’t over.

If we believe the best is behind us, we will never move into the future with any sort of speed or success, no one can lead if they refuse to move forward.

For that reason, I hope that each of you remember the days at Magnolia fondly. Always hold fast to your friends, the memories, and the valuable lessons, but also bear in mind that our time at Magnolia was just four years, not our whole life.
Cole: diploma in hand and he's off!

Our time in school was our foundation, a single piece of infrastructure in our travels through life. Like a bridge from childhood to adulthood, we have to go all the way across to reach our future. And our futures are filled with endless possibilities, if we agree that we must face forward, not back.

Magnolia, we are eagles, and eagles are meant to fly. And when we fly, we are moving ahead. We stay focused on our goals, ignoring the harshness of the world and any obstacles around us.

Eagles don’t soar above all others by refusing to leave the nest.

And neither will we.

Class of 2014, remember these days, but know for certain this is hardly the end.

Keep flying. Never lag behind because it is the future that truly matters. Each of us has what it takes to forge our own paths, create our own destinies, and go anywhere we want to go.

Thank you and God bless.

Okay, so I'm supposed to pick some of my favorite secondary characters from books or movies.

Sounds easy enough-

BUT-

I'm brain fried. In the midst of trying to wrap up the final touches on the third book in the Coulter Men Series, I'm sitting here staring at a blank scene thinking, duh...oh, no was that a little drool?

Gross, I know. It's the last leg blues.

BUT- there's always another BUT-

I have this:

My "little" boy, Cole, is seeking a dream. He loves football. Has since he started playing when he was eight. He trains five days a week, twelve months a year. As his senior year approaches, he doesn't want to call it quits. He'd like to continue to play after high school.

Soooo...he has been putting together his DVD for college recruiters.

Now, what does this have to do with secondary characters?

When our kids are born, we are center stage. We make the decisions, the plans, the rules. Home is the hub of their universe. As they grow, their world's get bigger, the dreams become their own.

That leaves us parents to cheer from the sidelines. To watch and take the pictures. To offer the words of wisdom and direction the main characters use to stay on course as they move toward their happily ever after.

We are the secondary characters

And every good writer knows, without those good, supportive secondary characters all you have is a flat tale that doesn't quite go the way you want it to go.

So, three cheers to the real life support cast!

*Since it's already public domain (which makes me nervous...what if a perv tries to kidnap my baby?!) and people assure me this is the way it's done- I'm going to share-

Here's my, um baby's video. It's rather long, but skip all the football stuff (and the addresses and phone numbers...geesh) and fast forward to the end for the weight training and tell me...can you believe I carried that boy on my hip?

As my astute cyber-twin, Mark Koopmans, pointed out...these guys aren't really my kids...they are now my security detail.

Here's Cole! He's #75. His little brother, Carter, is his spotter and is player #32 on the field.
