Goal Update

Misha Gericke and Beth Fred host a monthly blog hop that's meant to support each other and keep ourselves looking forward and staying on track.

The last Friday of each month, tell the hop members how you've done- like a Weight Watchers weigh in. Time to put the cookies down and tell us how well you've done.

Okay, so here were my plans for May:

1. Get Cole graduated.
         a) Have party- check. Ordered pizza. No one ever said I was a cook.
         b) Announcements sent!! Only a few came back with bad addresses. Que sera sera.
         c) I planned to skip painting the kitchen and bath- but I did it! OCD me couldn't look past the smudges and chipped paint.

2. Switch to summer blog schedule to spend more time with kids. Um well, not yet. Too many friends needing shout outs and promos, so sticking to two posts a week...some weeks three. But setting a time for visits and doing the best I can. That's my new idea of pacing!

3. Bella's Point will not launch until July 1st, so I did nothing to plan it. But publisher and I did agree to place Past Due on sale for .99 for the month of June, so I did get that set up. Thanks Alex Cavanaugh for this so very easy to follow post linked here.

4. Finish first draft of Defying Reason- done! Stick a fork in me, I did it!

5. Finish up beta and friend reads- half done. Finished Jay's, working on Celeste's. I did manage to read some awesome books:
Christine Rain's Thirteenth Floor Collection
Mediea Shariffe's Snip, Snip Revenge
Stephanie Faris's 30 Days of No Gossip
Georgia St. Mane's (our lovely Rachel Schiffelbein) Over the Ocean
*These are all excellent books...read them all!!

Now what's up for June?

1. Decide what to do to launch Bella's Point...suggestions in the comments is greatly appreciated ;)
2. Get Bella edited...remind editor to edit...just joking. He's a pro, he'll remember.
3. Get ready for vacation. Two weeks at the beach!!! Woot woot. Might even beg Dixie Browning (my retired novel writing hero) to get a picture with me.
4. Do some promos for Past Due while on the Outer Banks and while it is on sale.
5. Add some exercise to my life. Graduation pics glaringly prove that my eight hour days on the computer are catching up with me!! I am naturally sedentary, so this will be a challenge!
6. Break down the plot of Defying Reason. Must do this to make sure the story makes sense and every character has an arc (is that what you call a beginning and an ending?)
7. Start thinking about what to do on Cherries, the collab with that-Tammy Theriault. I am the weakest link here. I can't wrap my brain around a story until it starts to paint a plot picture in head and so far, this story looks a bit like a Picasso. But it's a great premise with such wonderful promise, so I have to start thinking it out.

Now, let's see if I accomplish my goals next month! Need a group to keep you on track?
Join us HERE!

Have you seen this?!!!

Shadow Warrior!!

The agony of a failed quest haunts Kanze Zenjiro, but the betrayal by those he once trusted has turned his world upside down. With a heart full of hatred and defeat, Zen is desperate to return home and demand the truth from his father.
Meanwhile, the Iberian Empire sends their soaring airships and steam-powered giants into the Orient. They threaten to upset the balance of power, hoping to exploit the faraway land in their greed for the resources needed to power their machines. Zen and his companions must fight to keep the world from plunging into total destruction.
And at the center of it all is a nine year old boy with the power of a god.

Shadow Warrior's release date is scheduled for August 4, 2014.

And how about this?!

R. Mac Wheeler has published his 24th book!
The self-described hermit spends his time writing, taking care of rescue dogs, and snapping the most beautiful photos. If you haven't checked out Mac's Sunday Safari on his blog, you need to. If you haven't read his books- you should. This romance loving, fluffy-girl-read devouring gal read New Order Apocalypse and it was EXCELLENT. Not even my genre, but the story still drew me in. Mac has a writing style as straight to the point and unique as the man himself.

Our Beautiful Child

The fabulously wonderful and talented Annalisa Crawford has one of those problems a newbie would kill for...her book is being published quickly. But just like a premature baby, it does cause some problems: how to spread the word and get the marketing done quick as yesterday. Fortunately Annalisa is the best of blogger friends and we're all happy to help her out.

Release date: 10th June 2014
Publisher: Battered Suitcase Press

"The Boathouse collects misfits. Strange solitary creatures that yearn for contact with the outside world, but not too much. They sit, glass in hand, either staring at the table in front of them, or at some distant point on the horizon.”

… so says the narrator of Our Beautiful Child. And he’s been around long enough to know.

People end up in this town almost by accident. Ella is running away from her nightmares, Sally is running away from the memories of previous boyfriends and Rona is running away from university. Each of them seek sanctuary in the 18th century pub, The Boathouse; but in fact, that’s where their troubles begin.

Ella finds love, a moment too late; Rona discovers a beautiful ability which needs refining before she gets hurt; and Sally meets the captivating Murray, who threatens to ruin everything.

Three women. Three stories. One pub.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
I live in Cornwall UK, with a good supply of beaches and moorland right on my doorstep to keep me inspired. I live with my husband, two sons, a dog and a cat.
Despite my location, I neither surf nor sail, and have never had any inclination to try. I much prefer walking along a deserted beach and listening to the waves crashing over rocks. For this reason, I really love the beach in the winter!

Class of 2014

12:00 AM Elizabeth Seckman 52 Comments

I'm visiting the Unicorn Bell  and chatting with the lovely Kristin
Come on over and say hi and sign up for the give away :)

I take great pleasure in introducing my guest blogger, Cole Seckman.
Unbeknownst to Cole, I have copied and pasted his Valedictorian speech from my hard drive to my blog.

Cole is the second Valedictorian in the family. His big brother, Caleb was the valedictorian in 2012 and his address can be found Here.

This year's theme for graduation was based on the Dr. Suess's "The Places You Will Go"...that said, take it away Cole!!

Cole Seckman

“You won’t lag behind, because you’ll have speed.
You’ll pass the whole gang and you’ll soon take the lead.
Wherever you fly, you’ll be the best of the best.
Wherever you go, you will top all the rest.”
                             ~Dr. Seuss

I’ve often heard people say high school is the best time of their life.

I know I will miss walking through the halls of Magnolia. I’ll miss the sound of closing lockers and the chatter in crowded hallways. I’ll especially miss the sound of the dismissal bell at the end of the day.

I will certainly miss that walk from the locker room to the grass of Alumni Field; the sound of coaches’ whistles in practice; and the referees on Friday nights. I’ll even miss hot summer two-a-days and after game lectures. I’ll miss players who are like brothers, and the ones who truly are my brothers.

As for my classmates, most I have known since kindergarten, I will miss you all as we head off on different paths. I think growing up together in a small town develops a special camaraderie that is difficult to duplicate. We know each other’s history and our families. Few classes can say, “there isn’t a stranger in our group.”

And there is no denying, our time at Magnolia High School has been an amazing ride. We’ve accomplished so much from state championships to outstanding academic success.

But the trip isn’t over.

If we believe the best is behind us, we will never move into the future with any sort of speed or success, no one can lead if they refuse to move forward.

For that reason, I hope that each of you remember the days at Magnolia fondly. Always hold fast to your friends, the memories, and the valuable lessons, but also bear in mind that our time at Magnolia was just four years, not our whole life.
Cole: diploma in hand and he's off!

Our time in school was our foundation, a single piece of infrastructure in our travels through life. Like a bridge from childhood to adulthood, we have to go all the way across to reach our future. And our futures are filled with endless possibilities, if we agree that we must face forward, not back.

Magnolia, we are eagles, and eagles are meant to fly. And when we fly, we are moving ahead. We stay focused on our goals, ignoring the harshness of the world and any obstacles around us.

Eagles don’t soar above all others by refusing to leave the nest.

And neither will we.

Class of 2014, remember these days, but know for certain this is hardly the end.

Keep flying. Never lag behind because it is the future that truly matters. Each of us has what it takes to forge our own paths, create our own destinies, and go anywhere we want to go.

Thank you and God bless.

Come Back and Update

Logan, Cole (my baby), Conner, Jacob, Stephen, Zach
My son and his buddies, Class Day 2014
Graduation season is keeping me busy, so forgive my lack of blog attentiveness.

Tonight I was on Facebook and couldn't even think of clever comments, much less whole coherent posts. Fortunately for everyone, the fabulous Melissa Maygrove is here!

Melissa has a new book, Come Back, that is making Melissa one happy gal with its awesome sales and its hitting the #1 Western Historical Romance spot on Amazon!

Awesome, right? Now let's let Melissa tell us one of the magical ingredients in this awesome story....

Come Back: Themes & Symbolism

Several themes emerged in Come Back as the story developed.

One thing the story highlights is: sometimes things are not as they seem. Another closely related theme is: we should be careful not to make life-changing decisions based on wrong information.

We see evidence of this with many characters, but especially with Rebecca and Seth. Becca assumes things about her abandonment, based on the evidence she has; but, as she discovers later, her perception’s not accurate.

Same with Seth. He assumes things without proof, and it affects his feelings about himself as well as his choices.

A third truth that comes through is: it's the person you spend time with whom you tend to fall in love with.

A myriad of things play a role in the complicated process of human sexual attraction, and many of those things rely on physical proximity—things such as neurotransmitters, hormones and pheromones, and just plain ol’ senses (e.g. tactile, olfactory and visual stimuli). You can’t get the full effect of that by mail or over the phone. It’s why so many long-distance relationships fail.

In the past, betrothal (similar to our modern-day engagement) was a serious and binding thing. Even so, Becca fell deeply in love with the man who rescued her, not the one she’d promised herself to. Much of that had to do with proximity and shared experiences.

On symbolism...

Like many writers, I often use weather and other setting components to foreshadow events and set the mood for scenes.

One symbol I used was Becca's hair. Wearing a braid at such an advanced age showed her to be a late bloomer. The change of the style into a bun symbolized her transition to marriage and adulthood. With that, she also lost her comfort object—the tail of her braid she often worried with her fingers when she was anxious.

Another was the weather combined with a wood-burning stove... and a few little prairie creatures (spoiler :P).

Becca and Seth find a brand new cookstove sitting by the side of the trail. They enjoy the modern convenience while they camp, but the next morning, a winter storm moves in as they leave. I purposely show Becca looking back, longingly, at the stove and then turning and facing ‘what was ahead.’ That moment marks a turning point in the plot—the shift from her false sense of security to harsher travel conditions and the heartbreak she’ll deal with when she finds her parents and her betrothed.

On the Write Path...

12:00 AM Elizabeth Seckman 88 Comments

Yes. Rumors are true. My mother is running away to Alaska. With her online boyfriend. Yes. I have pointed out all the possible pitfalls and problems with her plans, from possibly being beaten to death like a baby harp seal to getting homesick and being thousands of miles from home.

But she's 77 and he's 82...well past the age of consent, so I wish them well.

And you have to admit, no matter what way it goes...there is a story in this.

A friend of mine told me a story about an elderly fellow who ran away from the nursing home with his girlfriend. Staff called the family to report the gentleman missing, though they were pretty sure he'd be back. He'd left in such a hurry, he'd forgotten his teeth.

On the bright side- no matter how old you get, as long as you're alive, the heart still works and wants to be loved.

I'm also getting my second son (Cole) ready for graduation. It's so wrong that he's so excited and the whole thing just bums me out. Let's all say it together...where DOES the time go? I swear, he was in a car seat forever, then I let him out, and I turn around and he's shaving.

Sigh.

I'll quit whining now and move onto to my Write Path post.

Carrie Butler and Pk Hrezo are allowing me to add my two cents on how I stumbled onto my Write Path and share it in a letter to newbie writer me.

Dear Younger Me,

Put this on a post it note and pin it to your forehead, or your desk...you pick. But write this down word for word and duct tape that puppy where you can see it every day.

"Cry me a freakin' river."

Here's the deal....

You get to publish a book. Then another and another and another, which totally means you're on the Write Path.

But it's a tricky path, with plot holes, twists, turns, and the whole hike is up hill...both ways. I suggest you put your hiking boots on. Don't want to get blisters and quit. Pack your compass, so you know what guides you...love of writing goof...not cash. Geesh. Quit obsessing over money. Just keep going. I know, I know...you feel lost at times and think you should turn back, fortunately you have great friends who won't let you.

Friends? You ask...yes, you have friends! You know that blog you didn't want to start? Turns out it was your life line. Maybe you should ask them to remind you to Cry me a freakin' river.

What's the river of tears all about? Golly, you're so impatient! Don't you remember? You think it every day right now...every time you read a blog post whining about sales, marketing, and contracts...you think to yourself, Cry me a freakin'  river. My day started with rejections, want to trade me places, ya freakin' whiner?

Remember these days...there are writers who would love to have your problems.

Oh, and seriously, can you just pause every now and then and appreciate the scenery while you go? The trip is half the fun. I swear.

Love,

Future You

P.S. Swap the chocolate with carrot sticks as writing snacks right now! And buy better sunblock. You get pastier every year from the lack of sun exposure, so when you go out, wear a brand with an armor factor.

Author of Frontiers (Cybersp@ce Series)

Hi Elizabeth!

Below is a little about the FRONTIERS, along with some interesting plot elements from the book, and some corresponding facts, which I hope your readers will find interesting!

FRONTIERS: BOOK TWO IN THE  CYBERS@CE  SERIES
*A Dream to Unite Humanity...*
Scientists discover the technology to successfully construct Earth's first interstellar spacecraft, code named Frontier. Hank Reynolds, a gifted and courageous test pilot for the United States Air Force, is assigned to test
pilot humanity's first interstellar spacecraft on a historic flight to Alpha Centauri. Under the command of the fledgling Earth Space Alliance the spacecraft will carry human beings to the stars, and beyond.

*A Plot to see it Fail*
Someone doesn't want to see this happen and will stop at nothing to see it fail--including murder... When Frontier is sabotaged, it leaves Hank stranded and alone to die in the Alpha Centauri system. With their dreams
crumbling around them, will they be able to discover who is behind the plot  to steal the alien technology, and to murder those closest to it?

Some Plot Elements & Facts Related to Frontiers:
v  In Frontiers, scientists build humanity's first spacecraft capable of interstellar flight, which a craft that can travel faster than the speed of light
o   Fact: While Einstein's theory of relativity suggested Faster than Light travel (FTL) is not possible, many theories have been put forth as to how we might get around this galactic speed limit. Just think warp drive or wormholes.
v  In Frontiers, the development of the interstellar spacecraft also results in the creation of an alternative energy source, helping to stave off a rapidly dwindling world supply of crude oil.
o   Fact: HSBC estimates the world will run out of crude oil with  40-50 years.
v    In Frontiers, several principal characters discuss how critical it is that the advanced technology be unveiled carefully and methodically to the world, or else the world could suffer catastrophic consequences.
o   Fact: The Drake Equation, as it has become known, which was first presented by Drake in 1961, is a probabilistic argument used to estimate the number of active, communicative extraterrestrial civilizations in the Milky Way galaxy. Drake's equation takes into account that a number of such civilizations will end up destroying themselves with their own technology.
v  In Frontiers, a public announcement confirming the existence of sentient alien life causes quite a stir among some segments of the world's population.
o   Fact: Studies like one by Paolo Musso, a member of the SETI Permanent Study Group of the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA) and the Pontifical Academy of Sciences studies, and others, see no conflict between Christianity and the existence of extraterrestrial intelligence.

Thank you so much for allowing me to discuss Frontiers with your readers!

Thank you Jeff!!!
