I'd Like to Thank the Academy...No? Then I'll Thank the Bloggers...

Rena at Doctor Faerie Godmother offered me this award and I'm happy to accept it. Thanks Rena!

Here are my answers to Rena's Questions:

a.        What naive misconception did you have about writing books when you started? I honestly thought if my first draft wasn't magic, then I must suck. I imagined writers sat down and spun tales as easily as the Harlem Gobe Trotters spin basketballs.  Reality is, both take practice.

b.      What is your favorite part of writing? The actual writing. I always thought the book signings and such would be the best part, and I do love it....but it's the pulling the chair up to the computer desk and getting to work that keeps my blood flowing.

c.       What is the one thing you would change about publishing and why? I think right now is a marvelous time to be a writer. There are so many more options open that didn't exist a few years ago. As of right now, I'd change nothing.

d.      Do you have an inspiration list? Not really. I read my Bible and pray before I write. God created the world with words; they are powerful little things. I always want to use them wisely!

e.       If you were a super villain, what would be your fatal flaw? Insecurity. All someone would have to say is, "You look fat in those jeans!" and I'd have to stop, whine about it, and then seek reassurances from friends. During that time my evil empire would be infiltrated!

f.       If you were a super hero, what would be your super power? I'd be an empath. I was a quiet child, so I listened more than I talked. I think that helped me be better in tune with what people are feeling than if I was a loud, active sort of kid.

g.      If you could go on a trip to a tropical island but you didn’t get to pack anything before you left, would you go? Yes. If I can take my Visa. It's everywhere I want to be.

And Linda King of Excuse Me While I Note That Down offered me this award. Of course I love it!!! Thank you Linda!

Now both awards require I add 7-11 random things about myself. I split the difference, used my amazing math skills and will add 9 things About Me!

1. I was not a cheerleader in high school.
2. Everyone always thinks I was a cheerleader in high school.
3. I have nothing against high school cheerleaders.
4. I am as awkward as the whitest white girl on the dance floor.
5. I have zero coordination and often trip going up steps.
6. Although I have the perkiness, above mentioned flaws stopped me from ever considering being a cheerleader in high school.
7. My best friend in high school was a cheerleader. She wasn't really perky, but could do a back hand spring.
8. I can't even do a summersault.
9. I really don't give a damn that I can't tumble or cheer. If I want to live the life of a high school cheerleader, I'll write about it.

Thanks ladies!! I appreciate the awards, and the fact that you thought of me. :)

Now, I've seen these awards around, so I am going to only pass them on to a single blogger. She's new, she's fresh, and she's always in my inbox...Ms. Celeste Holloway of Words Done Write!

CassaStorm

It's beautiful dude, take a bow!

CassaStorm by Alex J. Cavanaugh

A storm gathers across the galaxy…

Byron thought he’d put the days of battle behind him. Commanding the Cassan base on Tgren, his only struggles are occasional rogue pirate raids and endless government bureaucracies. As a galaxy-wide war encroaches upon the desert planet, Byron’s ideal life is threatened and he’s caught between the Tgrens and the Cassans.

After enemy ships attack the desert planet, Byron discovers another battle within his own family. The declaration of war between all ten races triggers nightmares in his son, shaking Bassan to the core and threatening to destroy the boy’s mind.

Meanwhile the ancient alien ship is transmitting a code that might signal the end of all life in the galaxy. And the mysterious probe that almost destroyed Tgren twenty years ago could be on its way back. As his world begins to crumble, Byron suspects a connection. The storm is about to break, and Byron is caught in the middle…

Some Good Things!

3:00 AM Elizabeth Seckman 24 Comments

Let's take a moment to share. We're friends, so I can be honest...
sometimes small things please me. Not often, but it DOES happen. Here are a few:

1.
No. I have NOT lost my mind. Yes, that's meat. My husband is a farmer by heritage, so he grinds  our burger and sausage himself.

And he is kind enough to make some of them into patties for quick meals. This winter, he ran out of wax paper to separate the patties, so he used sandwich bags. Talk about genius! You don't even have to thaw them. Pull one from the freezer, peel off the plastic, and it's ready to cook!

2.
The excitement continues with a bottle of oil! I use cast iron cook ware, so if it ever gets "too scrubbed", I have to wipe it down with oil to re-season. In a hurry, I used the aerosol spray can of cooking oil instead. I stuck the cast iron pot in the cabinet and pulled it out a week or so later. The spray grease hadn't soaked in...it was all gummed up- stuck like gooey, undigestible  honey to the sides. Gross. I imagined this in my family's blood vessels and went straight to the internet and searched out different non-aerosol misters. Some leaked, some dribbled, and others just plain didn't work. But this little beauty...the MISTO, worked like a charm.

3. Last, but certainly not least...I loved this little eBook. I'm a big fan of Rachelle Gardner. I find her honesty and smarts about the publishing business refreshingly devoid of the "you stinky peon, why are you wasting the time of real writers" attitude I often feel from other agents.
I love this book. It's laid out simply and honestly. Both sides of the publishing biz are represented (traditional vs. self-pubbed) in a straight-forward lay out. *Which reminds me...I was perusing the book reviews and found one that suggested Ms. Gardner was biased toward the traditional route. This made me pause a moment...because the book is self-published!

Yeah, that made me giggle.

Told ya! I get amused by small things...but only sometimes.

Potty Shots- A Tammy Theriault Interview

3:00 AM Elizabeth Seckman 30 Comments

Did you notice my new badge? It's over there on the right side of the screen.

Do you see it?

I earned that.

Seriously, Tammy Theriault tried to break me, but she couldn't do it. Her questions were as odd as "National Enquirer" headlines. But to a chick who functions happily with a quasi-fantastical mish-mash of brain cells, these were soft balls.

Nice try Tammy. But I came prepared...

Seriously?
I make fun of those teens in the potty shots-
but I am humbled and have to ask- how do they do it?!

Betcha didn't know I have an outer space defense kit at my ready!!!

Thanks for my stinking badge. I'm gonna put it on a tee shirt!

"Cat and the Dreamer"

CAT AND THE DREAMER TOUR STOP!!!

"Cat and the Dreamer" is one of my favorite books. It's the sort of story I will gladly read again. It's the sort of book that if Annalisa Crawford was a really horrid person, I'd still have to say, "Yeah, she's a baby kicking bimbo, but she still wrote a pretty good book."

Fortunately...Annalisa is as nice as she is talented, so when THIS book is available in print, I will happily buy a copy. I already have the spot picked...right between, "The Bell Jar" by Sylvia Plath (suicidal, lovable teens) and "Jonathon Livingston Seagull"  by Richard Bach (they're both novellas).

What you sort books by alphabet? How odd...

While I try to figure you out, let's turn this white space over to Annalisa!!!

It's been a year since my novella Cat and The Dreamer was published! There have been lots of changes in my own life in that time, and I started to wonder what else had changed...

Thank you Elizabeth for inviting me over today!

My pleasure chick!!! :)

Today's topic: Manchester City winning the Premiership!

I know that won't mean much to a lot of you. Firstly, you have to understand I'm talking about the English football premier league (soccer), and I'm not talking about the red half of the city... pah! So I'll try to put this is terms that you'll understand even if you don't care about the specifics.

Before I was born Manchester City were a big football club, a fantastic club - they won trophies and everything. Then I was born and at the same time they seemed to fall away from the top clubs, bouncing up and down the leagues, but never being much of a threat either in the English leagues or in Europe.

In 2008 the club was bought by a company from Abu Dhabi, and became the richest club in the world. I don't like to boast about this too much - even after everything that's happened in the last year, I think there's far too much money in football. However, the money brought players, the players won the FA Cup in 2011, and they looked like they were heading towards winning the Premier League in 2012... And then they didn't... And then they did again... And then they had a really bad spell... Then they picked up.

The nearest rivals in the league - the only team who could beat us in the last few matches - was also the geographically closest, Manchester United... pah! (Sorry, it's an involuntary response.) They've called City 'the noisy neighbours' for ever - getting in the way, but never really amounting to anything. Hahaha... ahem!

Through sheer fluke/bad luck it came down to the last game of the season. We had to win our game; it would have been helpful if they lost or drew theirs.

We were losing, they were winning. Argh, no... then we came back level, in injury time, United won, we scored another slightly beyond when the whistle should have blown for full-time (commonly known in England as Fergie time). And...

WE WON! WE WON THE GAME AND WE WON THE LEAGUE AFTER 44 YEARS!

Of course, there was a lot more to it than that, it was the most rollercoaster 90 minutes I've ever spent in a pub. In fact, we ended up in two pubs - the first showed the first half of City's game, then switched to the Utd game. We jumped in the car, kids in tow (it was an afternoon game), and found another pub, and luckily everyone was backing City. When the final whistle went cheers rang out, I think I cried. In fact, there's a bit of a tear in my eye now.

We're not doing so well at the moment, Utd ahead of us, again... But at the moment, I don't care - I saw City win when I never imagined I ever would! This clip is the last five minutes of both games, in split screen - if you're eagle-eyed you'll notice how the emotions switch between the left and right screens! Best day ever!

"I live by faith, not by sight."
2 Cor. 5:7

Back in the day...I went to college.

I was the first in my family to go. I made up my mind when I was twelve: I wanted a degree. My dad said fine; get prepared. He took charge of my class schedule. That cool class where kids got to carry around flour sack pretend babies? Nixed by dad and replaced with physics. Choir? Tossed for chemistry. If I complained my dad reminded me...I wanted to go to college.

In 1988 I left high school behind and headed to Marshall University. Once there, I was encouraged to attend a seminar for "first generation" students.

I wanted to succeed, so I went.

Right out of the gate, the moderator informed us that as first generation attendees, the odds of graduation were NOT in our favor. Quite frankly, we were predicted to drop out...at almost double the rate of our "their parents graduated college" peers.

Seriously? That was a pep talk?

Hmmm...

My dad warned me college was work. And he taught me to do that work even when fun called.

I graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1992.

The truth is: odds don't matter. Persistence, learning, practice...that's what matters.

The same principles apply in the writing world.

And I can assure you...there are plenty of pep talks from nay-sayers who will assure you of your imminent failure before you even start.

Instead of letting it get you down...

might I suggest you just stop attending the meetings?

Overcoming Me

10:33 AM Elizabeth Seckman 46 Comments

Nick Wilford is hosting a blogfest to raise awareness and funds for a good cause...and you don't have to donate anything but a few brain cells. You see...Nick is compiling the entries in an anthology for publication. Nick's stepson, Andrew, has cerebral palsy and all proceeds from the sale of the book will go toward Andrew's educational expenses.

Read Andrew's story and entry info here

My first son was born in April and a spring baby meant a quick turn around until swimsuit season. All through May I cut calories and walked hills until the scale said I was back to pre-baby weight.

Problem was...the scale was back to normal, but my body was forever, um, shifted. I mean I never had a six pack, but I was far better toned than the jelly belly pooch a baby expanded tummy left behind!! It was loose and squishy and jiggled when I laughed like Mrs. Clause after a cookie binge.

It wasn't fair.

I tummy crunched and aerobacized....whined and complained...bitched and moaned.

But even shrunken, the belly was a lovely land of stretch marks and loose skin.

Tragic, huh?

First of June I headed to the mall with my niece, Kari, to bathing suit shop. Brave girl. I dragged her to every shop in the mall. Tortured her with my incessant complaining and whimpering; ignored her assurances that I looked fine. No, I looked like a pig. Florescent lighting and fat mirrors in dressing rooms don't lie.

Finally, I said screw it. Let's go for chocolate. I planned to hit the beach in a shorts and a tee-shirt instead.

On our way to the cookie hut, we passed a man with cerebral palsy. He walked on crooked legs, his ungainly stride supported by crutches. He smiled as we passed and offered the most cheerful hello.

Instant face palm, Elizabeth  is a dork moment.

I was obsessing about a body that never failed me. Legs. Arms. Fingers, toes, eyes, ear, and nose...all in perfect working quality.

As if reading my mind, my niece said, "Bet he would love to have your legs."

On that day, I learned a very important lesson:

There is a difference between adversity and sniveling.

And accepted that body do-able is far more precious than body beautiful.
